Shannon Moffit + PV Takeover + Day 2

PhotoVision Team

@samoffit Takeover Lesson Five, *Movement* 💃: I have shot plenty of moving objects digitally, but on film, the result is like sitting on a private beach at sunset with Channing Tatum giving you a back massage . . . pure bliss. Movement can render like paint tossed beautifully across a canvas, it is just heavenly. After many failed attempts at capturing movement with film (see Lesson Three and my “rejects” folder in Lightroom), my most successful spinning shot has been at 1/8th of a second, while leaning the camera on a table.

@samoffit Takeover Lesson Six, *1/8th of a Second* 🌸: To expand on the topic of slow shutter speed, I have learned that film has an uncanny ability to pull through when it is dark and create beautiful images at 1/8th. Ask me to take a photo with my digital camera at 1/8th, and you will get a *very* blurry photo. Film wins the handheld, slow-shutter-speed race every time. This shot was taken while holding my breath and slowly rolling my finger on the shutter button.

@samoffit Takeover Lesson Seven, *Close-up Rings* 💍: I have learned a few things about close-ups since shooting film. One, it is nearly impossible to get a sharp photo at f/2 with a Hoya filter (see my “rejects” folder in Lightroom) and two, it’s best to err on the side of overexposing when using a filter. The Hoya macro filter works just like a 90mm or 105mm macro lens, which are typically used for close-ups or portraits. This was taken on a Contax645 through a #Zeiss80mm at f/4 with a +2 Hoya macro filter, and then cropped closer in Lightroom.

@samoffit Takeover Lesson Eight, *Metering* 📷: This photo is from a personal project I did at the beginning of my film journey to explore #metering. I did not fully understand the difference between metering for shadows vs. highlights until this shoot. This image resulted from metering for highlights on the low, camera-right shoulder, bulb out, pointing back at the camera. (This image is part of a series that was featured in #RangefinderMagazine for their 2015 Photo Annual Awards.)

Donny Zavala + PV Takeover

Stephen Wood

Hello all, Donny Zavala here! It’s an honor to have the opportunity to take over PhotoVision’s Instagram for the next three days! I’m looking forward to sharing my film journey, my style, why I shoot film, how I got started and a bit about my upcoming workshop in Oregon! First off is this image from the Erich McVey Workshop last June in Elk, California. Prior to attending the workshop, I had been shooting film for about a year. When I first started shooting film, my eyes were drawn to Erich’s work. Long story short, he is why I shoot film. Attending his workshop was amazing and taught me a lot . . . yet, it was just the beginning of digging deep, chasing my film photography dreams and creating my own journey. Your journey is yours, but bring others along for the ride—collaborations lead to knowledge and inspiration. Be driven, be vulnerable, be available, be open, and lastly, don’t settle for less.

I was recently asked, “How do you avoid posing your clients?” . . . Honestly, I think posing a client is inevitable, as most clients are not models. However, I don’t call it posing—I call it directing to create real moments. Even though I direct, I will not take a picture until I see that my subjects are engaged in a small vignette of honest interaction. I choose the right backdrop with the right lighting, then I ask the couple to engage in conversation. This is where the story is told slowly and carefully through my images. My clients will get high-fives when they share their real moments with me! We will cover how to do just this in my upcoming Oregon Coast Workshop this August.

Often times it’s easy for us to focus on the small details of a shoot, and we forget how important it is to showcase the environment in which the story is being told. When I first started, I was always shooting close-ups and the intimate tight shots. It took a while to slow down and notice the scenery surrounding my subject. Case in point—recently I met with a client in Portland, Oregon who was getting married at Smith Rock and she said, “I want to remember where I got married.” So, grab yourself a 45mm to capture the entire scene. Your client will be thankful you did.

Light is the single most important element in film photography. Light is vitally important for how I want my images to turn out. Thanks to my main man, Erich McVey, who showed me the way, I’ll chase the light all day long, for it can make or break an image (as it will make or break my final images and how I want my style to continue to evolve.) My quick tip: find out your local sunset time, grab some Fuji400, a light meter and start shooting about 45 minutes before sunset and 15 minutes after the sun dips below the horizon line. Come learn more at the Oregon Coast Workshop! (Interestingly, this image was taken at sunrise. Similar rules apply.)

What are “authentic moments,” outside of becoming an industry cliche? Authentic moments come from events that are real, fluid and occur naturally. In the midst of a shoot, I constantly ask myself: Are these moments truly happening? Or am I making them happen? The client, now more than ever, is seeking authentic moments—and we, as photographers, must deliver. We can do this by having input in the pre-wedding itinerary. Allowing time to capture real moments as they unfold is crucial to avoid re-creating moments later in the day. Establishing a pre-wedding itinerary with your clients at the forefront will make this task much easier and your clients will love you for it! Yes, some weddings will need redirecting . . . but you’re in control—make it happen!

How often have you second-guessed your talents? Have you ever felt like your work wasn’t good enough to work with a certain vendor? Don’t worry, if we’re honest, we’ve all been there. I’ve been there. I’ve asked and been turned down many times. What does that mean? Does it mean I wasn’t good enough? Did my style clash? Was it because I don’t shoot film well enough? Why? This is perhaps one of the most challenging areas for photographers, and will tear many of us apart in ways that are unhealthy, creating doubt. Let me tell you one thing—don’t quit. Pick your head up and look the other way. Look for other opportunities. Having a few styled shoots under your belt can greatly impact your chances of being published, and I will cover how to do just this at the Oregon Coast Workshop this summer. Your opportunity is waiting. Go get it!

Going the extra mile for clients and vendors is a huge part of our job. This can be anything from a quick email to showing up early to scout the venue! Ultimately, word of mouth and how we interact with others will make or break a deal, I can’t stress this enough. Prior to working in photography, I spent 15 years in the customer service industry, where my day consisted of making people smile, making sure the door was held open for them and asking them how I could help. (If I could teach a class just on this, I would, but I think I’d need a whole workshop to cover this aspect of our jobs.) Self-employment is fun, but we still have to remember that we are working with other human beings who want to be well-liked, well-received and well taken care of. Come hear me speak about this at the Oregon Coast Workshop this August. We owe it not only to our clients, but to our career.

@fujifilm_northamerica #donnysvision #pvtakeover #contax645 #fuji400 #kailua #hawaii #photovisionprints #sp3000 #fujifilm#oregoncoastworkshop

Why do I shoot film? Seriously, shooting film is great—but it can be challenging, and at times, disappointing . . . bad light, out-of-focus images, incorrect settings and finicky cameras can make for an awful day. (You know what I’m talking about.) But I would not trade it for anything. Film has created an opportunity for me to work with amazing clients, vendors and other film photographers. I’m not biased toward all things film—digital photography is amazing, and there are lots of digital photographers who bring so much talent to the industry. So why is film for me? I have found that when I look at my film images, they evoke a feeling of satisfaction. I can remember the very moment I composed the image, hear the laughs from my clients and remember the second I released the shutter. It’s an art form that continues to challenge me. It allows me to be more consistent in my images and have control of my overall aesthetic. But don’t go at it alone. Ask other film photographers for advice, attend a film workshop, and most important, establish a relationship with the professionals at PhotoVision—they will care for you throughout your film journey!

Perry Vaile + PV Takeover

Stephen Wood

We are thrilled to welcome @perryvaile for the next four days as she takes over our feed! Perry is a fine art film photographer based in North Carolina with a heart for bold imagery and captivating locations. Go for it, Perry!  “. . . but my images don’t really look like theirs.” These are words that I’ve personally used to celebrate my singular artistic vision, and yet ironically, they are the same ones that I’ve used when I’m feeling my most vulnerable as a photographer. I happen to think though, that what really makes this community vibrant, impactful and staggeringly inspiring—are the outliers. I am absolutely thrilled and humbled (and perhaps slightly intimidated) to be taking over the PhotoVision Instagram this week, and I’ll be sharing some of my favorite images along with a bit about where my heart is throughout the process of capturing them.

@lindseyreganthorne @misshayleypaige @rrosecreative #perrysvision #pvtakeover #contax645 #photovisionprints #sp3000

In the epic battle of Kodak vs. Fuji, I’ve always stood strongly on the side of Portra, but it hasn’t been easy. I’ve been occasionally questioned by my peers, my husband (thanks for the support babe), and even once by a client who wanted me to shoot how she did, on Fuji. I’ve found through the struggle though, that it’s only made my understanding of both options stronger as I tried out every stock I could manage. It all led me ultimately to my final conclusion, that it’s the eye and approach of a photographer, rather than their metering or film stock, that makes the image.

After shooting the wedding of Victoria’s Secret Supermodel @lindsellingson—I know, no pressure right?! ;)—I was given the perhaps more intimidating task of getting the completed images back to @bridesmagazine within 36 hours. Of course, this could be done on digital easily, but on film?! I called PhotoVision and spoke with Brian at length about HOW we could make this happen. How does film get from Savannah, GA to Portland to Salem on a SUNDAY and processed and scanned within 36 hours? Though it seemed highly improbable at first, within 24 hours of shooting, I had flown from the Southeast to the Northwest and found myself sitting at a dinner table with the Woods and McVeys as my film was processing. By Monday afternoon, the images were in my inbox and into the hands of my client and the magazine before deadline. I love telling this story, because it’s a testament to sticking to your guns as a photographer (digital wasn’t an option I would agree to) and most importantly, to the absolute kindness and dedication that this lab has for their customers. They made something big happen for me, without expecting anything in return, and made a customer for life.

Have you ever shown up to a wedding, and felt “un-inspired”? After all, you don’t always have a stunning redhead in a vintage-inspired gown standing in the middle of church ruins. Life gets REAL, and real brides can have normal shoes, with normal florals and normal dresses. What happens then? Perspective. Take a quick moment to check back in with what matters. Serving your clients. See the beauty in WHO you’re capturing—not what—and embrace (with everything you have) the task you have in front of you, because your role is more important than the details.

Burnout can be another vacuum of our inspiration as creatives. One thing I’ve found that helps renew my excitement and keeps me motivated is to balance my season of long days with shorter, elopement-style weddings. My heart always connects with these couples, and they often allow more emphasis for portraits with significantly less stress or time investment. If you struggle with being over-worked, try taking on shorter days that you can be really, really excited about. Not only will it keep you motivated throughout the year, but it’ll allow you to serve everyone with a happier heart.

@perryvaile @kodak_photo @kodakprofilm #perrysvision #pvtakeover #contax645 #portra800 #photovisionprints #sp3000 #kodakfilm

Not only am I a big believer in keeping a constantly-renewed creative soul, but in finding a healthy work/life balance. One thing I love to do to prepare for the next week (or two), is check the PhotoVision website to get an idea of their estimated process/scan times (FYI—right now it is TWO DAYS!!). Typically, I’m able to determine the exact day my film images will be delivered to me, and this allows me to plan my week around it, trade baby-watching days with my husband, schedule shoots and set meetings with enough time to return my client’s images within 24-48 hours of receiving them back from PV!

On days where I feel like I might be just running through the motions of a portrait, and I really want to create something fresh, I’ve found that trying to photograph the same image in 10 completely different ways (without changing the pose) is an amazing exercise that pulls way more out of me than I might have otherwise pursued. Try it for yourself. You might find that the first few frames are easy (typically, shots that are wide, tight, of hands or blowing hair) but it’s the 5th, 6th and 7th shots that really make you think outside of the box, and the final 3 that push you into completely new approaches that might just be your best, most creative work yet.

@perryvaile @kodak_photo @kodakprofilm #perrysvision #pvtakeover #contax645 #portra800 #photovisionprints #sp3000 #kodakfilm

One of my very favorite writers, Anne Lamott, once said that “almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.” I’ve found it to be incredibly true, and also shockingly accurate, for the creative spirit. Taking a social media detox, sitting with friends in PERSON, watching the wind outside my window—things that, at first, seemed like they might take away from my business, have profoundly impacted its growth by releasing me to freely create without distraction.

This my favorite “first look” image I’ve ever taken, and it was of a couple I’ve never met. I was on vacation hiking in Alberta and looked up to see a lone man standing in a nearby field, as a woman in a wedding gown walked up to him from a distance. I could have easily missed seeing them entirely if I’d not been soaking in the view around me. I only had 3 frames left on my camera, and timed them to capture her approach, his reaction and their embrace. I continue to keep the image up in my office as a reminder that beauty is right in front of us, if only we pay attention.

@perryvaile @kodak_photo @kodakprofilm #perrysvision #pvtakeover #contax645 #portra400 #photovisionprints #sp3000 #kodakfilm

The more unique your images are in the sea of other fine art photographers, the better. Don’t worry if your heart is pulled into a direction other than “the norm.” You wanna shoot Shetland ponies on the coast of Ireland? Get it, girl. You think maybe Ektar film might be your jam? Hey, boy hey. Find what makes your work yours alone—be it location, posing, subject, shooting style, whatever that may be—and don’t apologize for it. Pretty soon, clients will be showing up for their Ektar-infused Shetland Pony Portrait Session, and you’ll be completely irreplaceable.

It’s hella easy to get so inspired, so wrapped up in own worlds as creatives, that we begin to define ourselves by what we MAKE. If there’s one bit of advice I feel most compelled to share (and remind myself of constantly) it’s that our most important roles, and nearly the entirety of our true worth, is in who we are to each other as spouses, parents, friends and encouragers. You are so much more than a photographer. Realizing this is the first step in making your business work for you, instead of the other way around.

Well, we finally made it! I’m at the end of my PV Takeover and it’s my hope that beyond simply providing tips and tricks, I’ve helped to  encourage you to celebrate the beauty in having a unique voice and reinvigorated you to have the strength it takes to stay the course. The Wood family at PhotoVision has been invaluable to me in my own journey on this path, and I’m forever grateful for them and the dedicated team at PhotoVision. If any photographer is interested in coaching, please join me in a one-on-one session I’m offering through @theschoolofstyling, or attend their full Creative Online Academy!
