Jake Anderson + PV Takeover + Day 3

Stephen Wood

I don’t always have the pleasure of working with a stylist on weddings, and because of this, I have had to become somewhat of an expert in that realm myself, in order to create a cohesive set of images that not only reflects my brand, but also my clients. As I begin to put together a shoot, I always start with colors or settings that evoke a feeling or mood for my clients from which I can compare all other aspects to (such as tablescapes, fonts, dresses, etc.). So, instead of gathering shot “ideas,” I gather words or emotions that reflect the nature of my clients—all within the realm of my brand. This process allows me to ensure a shoot that will not only have a cohesive end product, but also give my clients images that truly represent them.

Honesty, as a business model, but also in terms of image creation, absolutely impacts your work as a photographer! A few years ago, I was photographing a dress hanging from a tree (because that’s what you do with a dress, right?) and I thought, “Why the frick am I hanging a Jenny Packham dress from a tree?!” It just doesn’t fit . . . it doesn’t make sense. With every image I take, I ask myself, “Is it honest? Does it make sense?” #nodressesintreesplease

It has been mentioned many times before, but I, for real, cannot express how amazing of a lab PhotoVision is. Every time I interact with them, I am instantly set at ease regarding any concerns or questions I might have. I am comprehensively convinced I work with the greatest lab ever. Seriously people, develop a relationship with your lab, and send them a thank you letter every so often!

Jake Anderson + PV Takeover + Day 2

When I first began in photography, I found myself attracted to specific images, but could not quite point out why. Was it the colors? The location? The florals? The emotion? A combination? As I became more of a student of photography, I quickly learned it was the composition that caused my gaze to hold. Strong composition may seem an obvious thing, but having the knowledge to know how certain principles of design affect your images, and the ability to bring them to fruition, are extremely valuable lessons! Become a student of composition!

Personal projects. Some call them “styled shoots.” Some people hate them, some people love them. Honestly, I am a lover. They allow me to create relationships with people, amazing people, whom I may not have otherwise had the opportunity to work with—or grab drinks with, post-shoot. My best advice for personal projects/styled shoots is this: Select a mood, emotion or idea, and compare every creative decision you make during the shoot to this theme. This particular shoot was inspired by the waves of Lake Michigan rolling onto the shores of Wisconsin. Notice how the calligraphy and the arches of the florals evoke the sense of a wave. The composition is centered to give stability to an otherwise fluid set of images, giving the viewer something to rest their eyes on.

Posing (or if you’re really cool, “directing”) may be one of the hardest parts of our jobs. I thoroughly enjoy how much emphasis our industry is placing on movement (implied and actual) and I am convinced that the more intentional concentration there is on this concept, the more it will aid photographers’ abilities to effectively direct clients. During this shoot in California, I noticed the wind picking up on the ridge. I really wanted to push the feeling of movement, so I asked the couple to walk down the hill a few feet, kiss, and then walk back up holding hands. That’s all I “directed.” These simple suggestions resulted in a honest capture of the couple and their environment.

Jake Anderson + PV Takeover + Day 1

Stephen Wood

Hi! @jakeandersonphoto here! One of my favorite questions to ask is, “What is the intention, the purpose, of this?” And I found myself asking it in regards to this amazing opportunity of hosting a #pvtakeover. This is what I came to: To share some of my favorite images with you all, absolutely—such as this shot, taken in the beautiful, rolling hills of Santa Ynez, California (take me back, please!)—but to also allow some insight into my process and, hopefully, bring about inspiration and encouragement! Community is one of the most important aspects of our jobs as photographers, and I cannot wait to discover what incredible experiences await through this community of talent!

Part of my professional life that I have kept somewhat secret is that I am (in “real” life) a 6th grade math teacher. While this job is amazing and I get to high-five pubescent goobers all day, it also means I bring a unique perspective to my work in photography. I am as passionate about photography as I am about teaching! From June 27-30, I will have the amazing opportunity to merge both my passions during my workshop in Stillwater, Minnesota. In a year where there seems to be more workshops than photographers, what I really believe will set mine apart is my pedagogy. Instructional time, and the ability of the instructor to effectively guide attendees toward acquiring the skills they came seeking, is paramount. Workshop attendees will learn through hands-on activities, tasks and in-depth discussions. I am so excited for attendees to gather knowledge from our incredible hosts and speakers, including @emilieanneszabo, @studiofleurette and @emilymichaelsking, the Managing Editor of @oncewed.

One of the greatest learning experiences and opportunities I have had in my time is working with some of this industry’s best florists, and truly understanding how they view their work. When collaborating with a florist for the first time, show them your viewfinder. Ask them if you are seeing what they envisioned. Listen. Be willing and humble enough to let them step in and correct a few things. This bouquet, by @studiofleurette, has been one of my favorites—but it is only because I allowed myself to see it as florist Dani Erickson saw it.
