Hey, everyone! @erichmcvey here, and I am so excited to be taking over PhotoVision's Instagram account for the next week. To kick things off, I wanted to share an image from one of the first shoots I ever did on film. I had just attended @josevilla's workshop, at which I shot film for the first time. (I need to pause here and quickly mention that Jose is not only an incredible photographer but also an amazingly supportive, generous and kind person who shares his love of film and photography freely with others. I owe him a heck of a lot in my own personal journey as a photographer, and I am so thankful for all that he continues to do for the industry.) So, back to this image. It was the off season here in Oregon - a snowy day in February - and my wife, Amy, and I wanted to put together a shoot just for fun. We had our friend @meredithadelaide model, and Amy did the styling and hair and makeup. This frame is from the end of the day, after the sun had set. It was super dark, but we had the light of the fire to help us out. I shot this on Portra 800 at 1/15, my hands so froze. I could barely press down the shutter. I had no idea if it would turn out, and was so thrilled when I got the scans back from PhotoVision. It looked even better than I had hoped. The shoot was clearly not wedding related at all, but as wedding photographers, it is so important to sometimes step outside our comfort zone and create for no other reason than to create.

This image, shot on #fuji400h, was taken during an elopement in Big Sur. With no one present but their officiant, Jane & John exchanged vows on a secluded part of the coastline overlooking the Pacific Ocean in what was one of the most special, intimate days I’ve ever witnessed.

There’s nothing better than working with creatives who push limits, bring unique inspiration and energy to a shoot, and are passionate about what they do. This image was taken at @pearlandgodiva's #stylingpilgrimage workshop in Ireland. I loved working with the wonderful team that came together to create something special, including @sarah_winward, @lora_kelley, @_emilyriggsbridal, @kristinhayesjewelry and @stephaniefishwick

I love movement in photos. Whether it be a literal action shot, where the subject is moving through the frame, or a more implied movement like wind blowing through hair. Movement brings an elevated sense of energy to a moment. This image shot in Italy on #fuji400h, at @castellobracciano for @melindarosedesign’s latest collection, and featured as the cover story for @magnoliarouge.

Real emotion, captured during those unplanned moments that show the love and natural interaction between two people, is something I continually strive to capture. This image, shot on #fuji400h, during an engagement session in Carmel, CA, is a perfect example of that timeless authenticity I love to document for my clients.

Veils + sunset light. Always a winning combination. Shot on #fuji400h, this image was shot at last year’s #erichmcveyworkshop in Elk, California. Dress and veil by @_emilyriggsbridal, a phenomenal designer whose work I always love shooting.

Anastasiya putting on her shoes the morning of her wedding in a beautiful villa outside of Rome, shot on #fuji400h. I love shooting wedding details in a way that brings them into the bigger story of the day. Still life shots of things like shoes, rings and other accessories are great, but when you can show these special details as part of a broader scene or moment, it brings so much more depth and meaning to the individual elements, gathering them collectively into one overarching narrative.

Hands at work, shot on #fuji400h. This quiet moment was captured during @ginnyau’s creative process workshop in France, with an incredible team gathered to make a whole lot of magic.

Let’s be honest. Sun flare and I have a love/hate relationship. It has the potential to make a film image muddy and meh, but it can also make an image sing, like this one shot on #fuji400h in Sausalito, CA

Blurry love in motion, captured in one of my favorite locations – the Oregon coast. This image of @jessicarosephoto and her husband, Daniel, was taken on a cloudy day at Otter Rock, shot on #fuji400h.

This image is incredibly special to me – an intimate moment shared between two people I’m lucky to call friends, on the morning of their elopement. Shot on #ilforddelta3200. Kaela & Jonathan flew from Alabama to elope on the Columbia Gorge here in Oregon. They started their day slowly, making coffee and breakfast together, while I observed from a distance, snapping moments as they naturally unfolded. We then headed to a secluded forest where they exchanged vows.

Movement on film. I can’t get enough of it. This was shot on #portra800 during a session in my natural light studio that we put together just for kicks. It’s always freeing to create something without pretense or preconceived purpose, and I try to make sure I give myself time to do so as frequently as possible. It allows me to grow and push boundaries without hesitation or risk.

@ginnyau really broke the mold when she conceptualized and styled this session for the #erichmcveyworkshop in Elk, CA. Ginny provided this real couple, @jilliannadine & @alexmakuls, a few key directions/actions to recreate within their boudoir session. During a 20 minute period, music played softly and no one spoke. These quintessential attributes are present in all of her @loomcurated work, and has greatly impacted the way I interact with my own clients.

I love the way the colors shine through in this image, shot on #fuji400h. The light and sky were so perfect, I had to stop for a moment and capture this image during a portrait shoot on the edge of Fishing Rock, near Depot Bay, Oregon.

Thanks so much to everyone who followed along with me while I took over PhotoVision's account this week! Community is something I didn't even realize I needed until I finally had it in this industry, and it's something I try my hardest to contribute to on an ongoing basis. If you have a question, are looking for encouragement, or just want to say "hi", please know you're always welcome to shoot me an email at erich@erichmcvey.com. I'm truly happy to hear from all fellow photographers passionate about their craft. We're in this journey together, and building each other up is truly the fastest way to success and fulfillment for everyone. To wrap up this take over, here's one final image, shot on #fuji400h in Elk, CA during a scouting/planning trip for an #erichmcveyworkshop with @meredithadelaide, @ginnyau, @amymcvey and @twigssfloral. While we were shooting in a small secluded cove a massive grey whale appeared just off shore and watched us for 15 minutes while we worked. We all just stopped and stared in awe (before realizing the sun was setting and we needed to get back to shooting!). I'm so thankful for photography, the memories and experiences that being a photographer has provided me, and for the incredible people I've been lucky to meet along the way. Thanks again everyone - have a great day! - Erich
