Order Specific References

PhotoVision Team

#filmtipfriday Did you know Order Specific References are free for any order? This simple tool helps ensure we scan your film to best match your vision, with the end goal of saving you time in post! 🙌

Picture this—you are doing a branding shoot for a local calligrapher, and she has created multiple invitation suites for you to photograph on artisanal papers. You are floored by her talent and can’t wait to showcase her beautiful work on #film.

But here is the dilemma—our scanning technicians won't know what color a product is in real life unless you show us. This is where Order Specific References come in. While you are at the shoot, snap a few digital photos (your phone works great!) of the invitations to send in via email at the same time you ship us your film. Whether it be the color of a wall, fabric or design element, these digital snaps take just a second but go so far in helping us see exactly what color we need to be aiming for in your scans. The benefit to you? Greater accuracy in your scans means less time spent in post!

The above images is how we scanned without any Order Specific References, we picked a point of reference like this white background, and allowed the other colors to fall as they may.

This 2nd set of scans were made while using an Order Specific Reference—we now know what color the invitation is and kept that as priority!

"I think the light scans of the paper suite were just a case of the color tech's interpretation of proper color without a reference swatch or image. Luckily, I had taken a few shots on my phone that were the closest representation of how the colors appeared in real life, so I sent those in for the re-scan. The dinner space was very, very dark and required me to use a lighting technique I rarely implement, so I knew there was a chance I might need some scan adjustments. Sure enough, that was the case. My new scans feel truer to life and align with my goals for the images." — Sarah Ingram

Aside from being a guide to the coloring of certain products, Order Specific Refs are also super handy when you have a job that doesn’t fit in with your typical style. When this is the case, send us a few edited digital files from the shoot or inspirational images that represent your overall vision. We will reference these image(s) for just that shoot, then return to your regular references for future orders. This simple step can save you hours of editing in post!

Have Order Specific Refs for an upcoming job? Send them on in to info@photovisionprints.com!
