Maria Lamb + PV Takeover + Day 1

Stephen Wood

Hi all, @maria.lamb here. I am honored to have the chance to do a #pvtakeover for @photovisionprints, and I cannot be more excited. These guys have been incredibly helpful in my film journey since I started about 2-1/2 years ago, and I honestly owe them so much credit to my growth over that time. They have been so personal, involved and willing to help me throughout my whole film journey. I am a self-taught photographer, I never took classes in high school, and only took one digital photography course in college (where I was originally going to become a nurse). That was 6 years ago. And I have been shooting full-time for 4 years since. I learned about film through workshops and other creatives, including PhotoVision’s @_stephenwood, who has been super helpful to me from the beginning. Any time I had questions, any time I was going into a new lighting situation, Stephen was so great giving me advice on how to handle it. Over the next couple of days, I will be sharing some photos and thoughts with you. Happy to have you guys along for the little ride!

@maria.lamb Takeover Day 1: When I picked up my first film camera, I about died. I was so afraid to even touch it, and I also had no idea how to use it. Once I got my first rolls back, I thought, why have I not been doing this?! With that said, for some reason, I still had a hard time diving in. It took me about 6 months before I decided to throw away all fear and just go for it. Since then, me and that camera (Contax 645) have been inseparable. I realized that fear was holding me back from something so beautiful and fulfilling. Don’t let fear hold you back from things you are passionate about. If you are scared to do something, it’s likely that’s exactly what you should be doing. This image was from my first styled shoot on film, which was also my first time shooting all film. Because we didn't have a big budget, I decided to shoot the whole thing in just 4 rolls (a big thanks to @kaeandales for pushing me to do so on this shoot). It was very scary for me, not knowing how my film would turn out, but we all ended up loving the outcome. This really helped me grow and trust in my abilities.

@maria.lamb Takeover Day 1: Film has taught me so much. It makes me slow down and think before I shoot. Instead of just shooting endlessly and waiting till I get a great shot, I think about all the elements of what makes a strong image ahead of time. Film makes me more methodical about each individual frame, which in return creates intentional results and has made me a better photographer. The expense of film was a big motivation for me to slow down. I couldn’t afford to be shooting as much as I would when I was trigger happy on digital, and I didn't want to spend that much anyway, and I learned I didn't need to, either. Once I slowed down, I realized I enjoyed the process that much more, I could actually take a step back, look at the situation and interact with my clients more. It became a more intentional experience overall. I don't know that I would have slowed down if I hadn't chose film.

Jake Anderson + PV Takeover + Day 3

Stephen Wood

I don’t always have the pleasure of working with a stylist on weddings, and because of this, I have had to become somewhat of an expert in that realm myself, in order to create a cohesive set of images that not only reflects my brand, but also my clients. As I begin to put together a shoot, I always start with colors or settings that evoke a feeling or mood for my clients from which I can compare all other aspects to (such as tablescapes, fonts, dresses, etc.). So, instead of gathering shot “ideas,” I gather words or emotions that reflect the nature of my clients—all within the realm of my brand. This process allows me to ensure a shoot that will not only have a cohesive end product, but also give my clients images that truly represent them.

Honesty, as a business model, but also in terms of image creation, absolutely impacts your work as a photographer! A few years ago, I was photographing a dress hanging from a tree (because that’s what you do with a dress, right?) and I thought, “Why the frick am I hanging a Jenny Packham dress from a tree?!” It just doesn’t fit . . . it doesn’t make sense. With every image I take, I ask myself, “Is it honest? Does it make sense?” #nodressesintreesplease

It has been mentioned many times before, but I, for real, cannot express how amazing of a lab PhotoVision is. Every time I interact with them, I am instantly set at ease regarding any concerns or questions I might have. I am comprehensively convinced I work with the greatest lab ever. Seriously people, develop a relationship with your lab, and send them a thank you letter every so often!

Kirstie Marie + PV Takeover

Stephen Wood

I hope there are some horse lovers here, because the next three days equine photographer @kirstieeemarie will be filling your Insta-feed! Welcome, Kirstie! We’re so excited to have you! . . . I am SO happy to share some horsey images with you all this week! I thought I should start with an image I took very early on in my photography career. I got my first DSLR during my senior year of college, and it wasn’t long before I retired that camera, bought a Contax 645, and went to 100% film. I was planning my wedding at the time and was extremely drawn to the aesthetic of film photography greats like Jose Villa and Erich McVey. I started taking photographs of the only thing that I knew and loved—my pony in my front pasture. This quickly grew to me taking pictures of the one thing that I felt needed documenting—how much a girl loves her horse.

@kirstieeemarie here again with a few tips & tricks should you ever find yourself in a situation where you are shooting horses. First, make sure your equine model is comfortable. Horses are extremely expressive with their eyes, and a worried eye is a strong indicator that your horse is stressed out (and probably won’t be very cooperative). They might need to go for a walk, eat some grass, see another horse buddy to calm their nerves or get lots of pets to settle down and relax a bit. Second, always make sure their ears are forward. Always. I have an assistant come to every shoot of mine and their sole job is getting the horse’s attention. Noises, motion and food work very well to get a great expression on the horse’s face.

I (@kirstieeemarie) am still deeply inspired by film wedding photography, and one thing I love most is how much connection there is. I kid you not, I actually get most of my posing ideas from engagement photography. I just—you know—replace a handsome man with a handsome steed :).

@kirstieeemarie here for day 2 of the PV Takeover!! One of my favorite parts about living in Texas is the spring full of wildflowers! Nothing depicts the brevity of life quite like a bluebonnet flower. Their beauty is mighty, but their season is short. Just as the bluebonnets can be fleeting, so can a horse’s mood. I am at the mercy of every horse I work with—because they are 1200-pound animals with a mind, will and agenda of their own. With enough patience and horse treats, sometimes I can coax them into the pose or position that I envision, but more often than not, I work around what they want to do.

I’m not sure if you know this, but unicorns are real. And so is Portra 800’s love for the color red.

There are few things I love more than horses on film. I mean, I am a sucker for a willow tree, gorgeous light and Fuji 400H that wraps around my subjects and makes them glow, but to an equestrian, a horse is so much more than a pet. Her horse is her teammate, her therapist, her teacher and her best friend. I’m just trying to capture everything he means to her in a photograph, for her to remember the bond they shared.

There are only a handful of equine photographers I know of who choose to shoot portraits with film. PhotoVision can attest that in many of my shots, the horse is walking off, yawning, swishing off a fly or—heaven forbid—blinking during my shutter release. Working with horses requires a great amount of patience and a large tolerance for wasted shots. But if you shoot film, you understand the gratification when you nail the shot.

@kirstieeemarie #kirstiesvision #pvtakeover #hasselbladh1 #fuji400h #gibbsshowhorses #collinsville #texas #photovisionprints #sp3000 #fujifilm @fujifilm_northamerica

One of my favorite things about shooting horses on film is getting to capture the details of horse show outfits. Women who compete in Western events wear shirts that are intricately designed, with handset beadwork and Swarovski crystals. They are works of art in their own right, intended to compliment the color of the horse and catch the judges’ eyes in the show pen.

@kirstieeemarie here, ready to sign off from the PV Takeover this week. This has been SO MUCH FUN and I am so humbled and honored that PhotoVision asked me to share some of my heart with you all. I hope you have enjoyed your daily dose of equine beauty <3. My parting advice, is to shoot what you love and love what you shoot. Don’t be afraid to be vulnerable with your clients and establish a real relationship—a real friendship. I absolutely love what I do because I truly love who I do it for. I leave each of my shoots emotionally attached to both the women and horses alike. If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to direct message me at @kirstieeemarie or @kmplearn.
