Brian Whitt + PV Takeover + Day 3

PhotoVision Team

@brianwhitt Takeover Day 3: I just love the joy this mama feels for her baby in this moment. I am constantly pushing myself to capture more authentic moments. Never be afraid to respectfully take charge of a shoot. I often, if not always, pick locations for my clients and often help them pick their outfits. After all, they are counting on ME to deliver my best, and so am I. It is OK to take charge in a heartfelt and confident manner and simply explain why you’ve selected a particular location. However, I will always ask where my clients feel their best—open spaces or closed spaces. As I have learned from @ginnyau’s styling course, this will help put clients more at ease. Believe in yourself no matter what! You are worth it. You have a skill and a talent and a commitment as a photographer to deliver powerful and meaningful images to clients.

@brianwhitt Takeover Day 3: “Vulnerability is about sharing our feelings and our experiences with people who have earned the right to hear them.” — Brené Brown

Be bold. Share your talents with the world and always deliver your best work! You will soon find yourself surrounded by creatives who continuously inspire you and encourage you to execute your vision. I loved collaborating on this bridal editorial shoot with @elizabethdye titled #projectpirateship. The concept was born from Elizabeth’s creative vision, inspired by a ‘90s music video and a shipwreck, that took place off the Oregon coast. Here, our bride is longing to see her groom as she waits on shore for his return. (Spoiler alert! He doesn’t make it, so the shoot takes a moody, but beautiful turn.) This project was such a blast and it’s always a pleasure to try something new creatively with great friends.

@brianwhitt Takeover Day 3: No matter what, always be yourself when working with other people, and don’t be afraid to have a little fun! From time-to-time, I feel like I need to constantly direct my subjects, but I have to remind myself this isn’t the case. I want my clients’ photos to be unique to them, to be a true documentation of their personal relationship—not what *I* think they should be or how they should look. I’ve found that when I give my subjects broad, sweeping directions, the outcome is much more genuine. When the moment and the couple are right, I can say, “Hey, whisper something weird in his ear!” And that’s when we get an interaction like this . . . one of pure joy.

@brianwhitt Takeover Day 3: A huge thanks to PhotoVision for allowing me to take over their Instagram for a couple days. There is absolutely no way I could do this work without them. They are such a highly-capable, responsive and genuine group of people. I feel so grateful that they process my film. Their work is second to none!

It has been such a pleasure sharing some of my vulnerabilities as a creative and how to inspire your couples to be more vulnerable. We are all on this journey together. May we continue to support and encourage one another along the way. Keep up the great work, everyone! And please, feel free to drop me a line at Brian@BrianWhitt.com, I am here to help! 🙂

Brian Whitt + PV Takeover + Day 1

PhotoVision Team

Hi there! My name is @brianwhitt. I am a wedding and editorial film photographer based in Portland, Oregon and I am honored to be hosting a #pvtakeover for the next few days. I totally could not do this without PhotoVision! Over the last few years and many conversations, I have fallen pretty hard for PV. More doting on PV to come, but during my time with you, I want to talk about something that is not always as pretty as the images we share . . . Vulnerability. As creatives and photographers, we experience it all the time—heck, it's part of being human! Being vulnerable as an artist means taking chances, putting yourself out there and bringing to life something no one else has seen before. For us wedding photographers, we do this by showing the love and unique connections our couples share in a beautiful, artistic way. I personally have a huge thing for human relationships, and I believe these connections are why we are here—to be vulnerable with one another. If you'd come along with me, over the next few days I'll be sharing how some of my own creative vulnerabilities actually led to spectacular outcomes, along with a little help from my friends at PhotoVision!

@brianwhitt Takeover Day 1: This . . .  the FIRST image I ever took on film, was at the #erichmcveyworkshop and was scanned overnight by PhotoVision! In my opinion, there is a lot of beginner’s luck in this image, as it took me another good year of playing with only one or two film stocks to really embrace and feel confident about being a film photographer. Up until this image, I was shooting digital for about a year and a half. And before my digital days, I hadn’t picked up a camera more complicated than an iPhone. But once I realized film was what I had been seeking, I was hooked—hard—and jumped into the deep end. I put all my business’ resources toward @erichmcvey’s workshop in October 2014. It was a huge exercise in vulnerability for me. I had never worked with film before and knew so little about film photography, but here I was investing in a workshop led by a super-talented guy with a #manbun surrounded by talented photographers. The only thing I had to lean on was my gut feeling that I knew it was the right investment both professionally and personally. Erich and @amymcvey’s workshop was beyond incredible, and this image wouldn’t have been possible without a ton of wonderful folks believing in my work before I truly did.

@brianwhitt Takeover Day 1: Creating a safe space that enables couples to feel super comfortable is paramount to me. I love the moments when I am able to encourage couples to be vulnerable with each other so their unique love can shine through in an image. I want them to remember and be inspired by these moments again and again. Working with couples out in nature in small, intimate groups has really enabled me to foster a space of comfort and freedom, allowing couples to express their love more freely. Also, I give lots of positive feedback during the shoot to lighten the mood, by telling couples how much I love what’s happening in the moment, by cracking jokes or just by talking about one of my favorite subjects—food. When you take the focus off your camera, folks can really relax, and then you have an opportunity to capture real, true, authentic moments. Lindsay and Jai here have such a beautiful love and I wanted to be sure I caught an image of their tenderness for one another.

@brianwhitt Takeover Day 1: This shot did not magically appear after the first try. It took me 3 or 4 good runs to capture the inherent movement of @clairelafaye’s stunning gown. When I first started photographing people, I used to feel silly asking a model or couple to repeat a movement or pose. I would think, “Is this person going to wonder why I didn’t catch it the first time?” or “What the heck kind of professional is this guy?!” But over time, I relaxed and learned to pay close attention to what catches my eye, to try new things and never compromise on delivering the best results I possibly can. That doesn’t mean I act like a little Mussolini who has to control everything. The goal for all of us is to deliver our own best work. There is no need to feel silly for doing something different, as long as your clients are having fun. Take a chance on your vision and be confident with the people you are photographing. Most likely, others will believe in you and add to your vision. And when they see their final images, they will be so happy you went for it!

@brianwhitt Takeover Day 1: I have become such a sucker for close-up portraits! I love their intimacy and how they capture something special about the subject. When I first started photographing people, I would not have dared getting my camera 10 inches from someone else's face. Talk about being all up in their personal bubble! When you take shots like this, it's all about expressing confidence in yourself and inspiring confidence in your subject. I give lots of positive encouragement and very little direction to help my subject feel comfortable in the vulnerable moment we share. I also don’t linger and try to make the process fairly quick and painless. Here, there is something to be said about @kimiaa7’s eyes that seem to gaze straight through you.

Matoli Keely + PV Takeover

Stephen Wood

Next up on PV Takeovers, we’re honored to welcome @matolikeelyphoto! Matoli is based in San Diego, CA and the DC metro area and loves to travel and see where her passion takes her. Stay tuned for the next three days as Matoli shares her wisdom on all things film! . . . I have been lucky enough to build an amazing relationship with the PhotoVision team, and I can’t express enough how honored I am to be doing a three-day Instagram takeover! My film journey began Feb. 2014, when I purchased a 35mm camera from eBay. Through a lot of trial and error, I realized I had an incredible amount to learn. That fall, I attended Erich McVey’s workshop and it completely changed my life. From then on, I have sought to learn all that I can about film, find my vision and also push myself try new things—even when I continuously fail. This image was taken at the workshop and is one of my favorites because it was the first time I began to truly understand how composition and framing can elevate an image. I look forward to sharing some of my favorite images, the stories behind them and also some photography tips.

Film and light go together like peanut butter and jelly, mac and cheese, yin and yang! On their own, they are amazing, but put together, they can honestly be breathtaking. I could not reinforce enough how important it is to chase the light. You might be afraid to take the leap and put your subject directly in front of your light source, but trust me, when you nail the shot, you nail it! When I try something new with my shooting, I still keep a notebook with me that has my settings—just in case the image is not what I was expecting, then I know exactly what I did wrong. This has helped me tremendously to avoid the same mistakes over and over. This image was Fuji400 at f2, and the sun was just at the perfect spot on the horizon. I was originally shooting her from the side, but when I stood directly in front of her, the light was incredibly bright—I could barely see her face—but I decided to take the shot anyway because I knew the dynamic range of film could handle it.

One of the greatest things you can do is keep shooting as much as possible—different stocks of film in different lighting conditions. This is the only way you can definitely determine what works for you and what does not. I was fortunate to take a trip to Portugal last year, and during my free time, I explored some of the cities and captured as much as I could on film only. Personal work is the best way to really develop your eye and push your creativity. When you are shooting for yourself, there is more freedom to experiment and continuously foster your love for photography. It is also a great way to get to know your camera, its limits and make it an extension of yourself. It should be second nature when you handle your camera, and the only way to do this is to shoot, shoot, shoot!

Photography is an incredible source of storytelling. This is one of the reasons why I absolutely love film—it has allowed me to slow down and just be in the moment, and that is something I always encourage others to do. When you take the moment to think of what is happening, why you are taking that specific frame, and then compose and click the shutter, you are making that frame count! I have come to appreciate photography a lot more since I stopped shooting for the sake of shooting and actually began having intention behind each frame. In this image, the bride was putting on her late mother’s bracelet, which she had worn during her own wedding. What an incredibly significant moment for her, and I was honored I could give her this image to represent it.

My journey into photography is a little different from most. My background is rooted in the sciences, specifically biochemistry and molecular biology. It’s often a surprise to others that I have completely different passions I pursue—yet I have found a way to make both of them work. The analytic and high-attention-to-detail portion of the sciences definitely helps with my shooting and quest to continue to push myself and get answers and the results I desire. My point here is that not everyone is able to go full-time with photography for several reasons—but don’t let that stop you from pursuing your passion. Always find a moment, if possible, to keep fostering that creative part of your life. I tend to take my camera with me everywhere when not at work, just in case I see something worth capturing. This image was taken in a parking lot when I saw these gorgeous blooms! Don’t forget that beauty is all around us.

It has been an incredible honor to share some of my favorite images and provide a few photography tips, which I hope were helpful. Thank you to my lab team, PhotoVision, for giving me this platform and opportunity to share my experience. You have all been very instrumental in my journey and the consistent advice you provide is invaluable. I will leave you all with this—you never know your true potential until you push yourself. You may feel the odds are against you, you may be discouraged when you fail, but no one is perfect, no one gets it right the first, second or even the third time—and sometimes we may never get “it” at all, but during the process, you will definitely learn something valuable. Thank you, everyone!
