kelbert McFarland + PV Takeover + Day 1

Stephen Wood

@kelbertmcfarland Takeover Day 1: I do my best to give a bride and groom space on their wedding day. After the vows are given and the rings are exchanged, the following minutes tend to yield the most revealing and intimate moments of the day. That's when I always ask the couple to go on a walk, and I simply follow and document. I point them in the direction of the light and do my best to not give much instruction. A photographer has to learn to trust love, trust time and trust themselves as well. You'll be amazed at what you see and capture naturally as a result. Of course, no medium handles that beautiful golden light better than film and, in my opinion, PhotoVision is at the top of the list for processing and scanning film properly. More on that soon.

@kelbertmcfarland Takeover Day 1: There's no special formula. It's not *this* certain camera coupled with *this* certain film stock that yields a great portrait. Actually, I'm not sure what makes or breaks a portrait. My gut (instincts) always tells me to allow the client to be honest with their expression and how they're feeling. I think that could be it. It's been said that honesty is the best policy. I believe it. It can be seen and detected quite easily. So can a fake one. Don't settle for the fake. Have good intentions when shooting and wait for the honest moment. It will come.

@kelbertmcfarland Takeover Day 1: So about that brilliant backlight we all love so much—I can't get enough of it, either. You'll notice in the previous two posts, as well as in this one, each subject is backlit, yet the lighting scenario is different for each. You have the sun that's already past the horizon, then in the following image, the sun itself, so soft and golden, was captured intentionally to add to the portrait and finally, the brilliant rays of the sun being filtered by trees in this image. I always encourage photographers to always look for light. The best light is the light you have right before you. Find a way to capture it and allow it to add to the shot. Also, meter with intention and communicate with your lab as to how you saw the final outcome of your shot. Communication is vital to seeing your vision to completion. PhotoVision has always been available for any questions or comments. Don't hesitate to call them.

Anna Peters + PV Takeover

Stephen Wood

Welcome to the second installment of PV Takeover! This week, we are proud to feature @annapetersphoto, winner of @bellelumieremagazine's Image of the Year! Take it away, Anna!

Hi all! I am excited to share a few images and some thoughts on film photography, life, the universe and everything (well, perhaps not everything, but you'll be my instant friend if you get that reference). I'll begin with a image from early in my film journey. In fact, this shot is from the first roll I ever ran through a Contax 645 (and one of my first PV orders). Needless to say, it was love at first scan. I taught myself to shoot 35mm film long before I knew a film community or fantastic labs like PhotoVision existed. Even with access to these great resources, I still believe that good old trial-and-error is the best way to get an intuitive feel for the ins and outs of film. Just get out there and shoot it—the learning curve is inevitable!

Okay, so I think I live in an exceptionally stunning place—but EVERY part of the world boasts uniquely incredible natural spaces, and it’s so freaking inspiring that we, as photographers, get to take direct advantage of this. In the Pacific Northwest, going the extra mile (literally) is always worth it, as the landscape shifts from misty mountains to rugged coastline in a matter of a few hours' drive. This engagement session was especially memorable because my couple was game for a several-mile hike topped off with a float around a nearby lake in their canoe! As a result, we were able to take advantage of this tucked-away gem of a trail, and got to pay tribute to their adventurous love with some gorgeous imagery.

A long-time ballerina, my dance training has instilled in me a deep love of movement and an appreciation for the human form that affects much of my work. In particular, I think that having bodies move through even seemingly mundane movements like running or walking creates relaxed, effortless lines that can be hard to achieve in static positions. This holds doubly true for kiddos, who can feel stiff and uncomfortable when asked to pose—though adults are susceptible to that stiffness, too, and I always start off engagement sessions by having couples walk together. I like how the movement here in this photo contributes to capturing the sweet bond between sisters.

Oh man, I have so much love for a clean, emotion-driven image. While there are so many details to shoot and creative opportunities that arise on a wedding day, I never want to miss a chance to capture an impromptu kiss like this one, because I'm fussing with the way her dress is laying, or trying to position their hands just right, or—you name it. This is such a simple shot lacking any additional details, but darn if it doesn't make me smile.

Simplicity—a mantra I return to again and again, especially at the beginning of a new year. I recently finished Marie Kondo's "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up" and I really resonated with the language she uses to help readers kick the clutter habit. She asks you to consider each material item in your home and only keep those that truly *bring joy* into your space. I like the idea of applying this principle to detail shots— instead of trying to check off a bunch of standard shots we think will be helpful for publication (you know the ones—I’m guilty of it, too) perhaps, instead, allow yourself to be drawn to the unexpected details of the vignette that bring you joy. In this "ring shot," finding the most joyful elements, for me, meant pairing the clean line of the gown's fabric with the softness of my bride's hand.

Thank you all for following along with my PV Takeover! On my way out, here's something a little different— During the past few months, instead of fighting the darker, moodier light of Seattle winter, I decided to embrace it and take an opportunity to explore a new direction in my personal work. PhotoVision was an instrumental part of this, and the team was so responsive and helpful in getting the tones and exposure I wanted out of this shoot! I love having such a collaborative relationship with my lab, and I always feel that my work is free to discover new ground and evolve, which is SO important. Wishing everyone the happiest New Year! Thanks again for having me!
