Nikki Santerre + PV Takeover + Day 1

PhotoVision Team

Hi, y’all! My name is @nikkisanterre, and I’m so honored to be invited to this space by my beloved friends at PhotoVision to share some of my work with you this week. I’m a Virginia-based film hybrid photographer who is also a wife, pup mama and about to be a new mama to my firstborn, Mason. I’m passionate about motherhood, education, written words, experiencing new places, serving others, Fuji greens and my second home, Charleston, SC. I’d love to have you follow along this week, and please feel free to ask any questions along the way!

@nikkisanterre Takeover Day 1: The life that is meant for you happens on the other side of fear. If you had told me two years ago that I would be running a full-time business that fulfills and inspires me and carries me across the country, I probably would have either laughed or shuddered with nerves at the thought. If you fear the film process, just press the shutter and develop the rolls. If you fear collaboration, find your tribe of people who will dance in your corner. If your submission is declined, don’t find your value in that, just re-send it. If you’ve got a “passion project” on your heart, start a list today of ways to make it happen. If you just say “yes” to chasing those things that make your spirit come alive, you get a glimpse of what you would have missed had you said “no.”

@nikkisanterre Takeover Day 1: Giving my clients prompts is the best way I’ve found to elicit authentic emotion. During this anniversary session, I encouraged him to pull her in as close as possible and whisper into her ear his favorite memory from their first year of marriage. This moment turned from quiet and sweet to a moment of laughter and joy as they reminisced on a personal joke between the two of them. There are times during a session where I remind my clients that I am there to be an observer, to document true moments as they unfold between them. It’s in these moments, the in-between moments, that I usually capture my favorite frames, because they’re the most intimate.

Brian Whitt + PV Takeover + Day 3

PhotoVision Team

@brianwhitt Takeover Day 3: I just love the joy this mama feels for her baby in this moment. I am constantly pushing myself to capture more authentic moments. Never be afraid to respectfully take charge of a shoot. I often, if not always, pick locations for my clients and often help them pick their outfits. After all, they are counting on ME to deliver my best, and so am I. It is OK to take charge in a heartfelt and confident manner and simply explain why you’ve selected a particular location. However, I will always ask where my clients feel their best—open spaces or closed spaces. As I have learned from @ginnyau’s styling course, this will help put clients more at ease. Believe in yourself no matter what! You are worth it. You have a skill and a talent and a commitment as a photographer to deliver powerful and meaningful images to clients.

@brianwhitt Takeover Day 3: “Vulnerability is about sharing our feelings and our experiences with people who have earned the right to hear them.” — Brené Brown

Be bold. Share your talents with the world and always deliver your best work! You will soon find yourself surrounded by creatives who continuously inspire you and encourage you to execute your vision. I loved collaborating on this bridal editorial shoot with @elizabethdye titled #projectpirateship. The concept was born from Elizabeth’s creative vision, inspired by a ‘90s music video and a shipwreck, that took place off the Oregon coast. Here, our bride is longing to see her groom as she waits on shore for his return. (Spoiler alert! He doesn’t make it, so the shoot takes a moody, but beautiful turn.) This project was such a blast and it’s always a pleasure to try something new creatively with great friends.

@brianwhitt Takeover Day 3: No matter what, always be yourself when working with other people, and don’t be afraid to have a little fun! From time-to-time, I feel like I need to constantly direct my subjects, but I have to remind myself this isn’t the case. I want my clients’ photos to be unique to them, to be a true documentation of their personal relationship—not what *I* think they should be or how they should look. I’ve found that when I give my subjects broad, sweeping directions, the outcome is much more genuine. When the moment and the couple are right, I can say, “Hey, whisper something weird in his ear!” And that’s when we get an interaction like this . . . one of pure joy.

@brianwhitt Takeover Day 3: A huge thanks to PhotoVision for allowing me to take over their Instagram for a couple days. There is absolutely no way I could do this work without them. They are such a highly-capable, responsive and genuine group of people. I feel so grateful that they process my film. Their work is second to none!

It has been such a pleasure sharing some of my vulnerabilities as a creative and how to inspire your couples to be more vulnerable. We are all on this journey together. May we continue to support and encourage one another along the way. Keep up the great work, everyone! And please, feel free to drop me a line at Brian@BrianWhitt.com, I am here to help! 🙂

Erich McVey + PV Takeover + Day 5

Stephen Wood

@ginnyau really broke the mold when she conceptualized and styled this session for the #erichmcveyworkshop in Elk, CA. Ginny provided this real couple, @jilliannadine & @alexmakuls, a few key directions/actions to recreate within their boudoir session. During a 20 minute period, music played softly and no one spoke. These quintessential attributes are present in all of her @loomcurated work, and has greatly impacted the way I interact with my own clients. MUAH by @mimiandtaylor | Location: @cuffeyscoveranch | Shot on #portra800

I love the way the colors shine through in this image, shot on #fuji400h. The light and sky were so perfect, I had to stop for a moment and capture this image during a portrait shoot on the edge of Fishing Rock, near Depot Bay, Oregon.

Thanks so much to everyone who followed along with me while I took over PhotoVision's account this week! Community is something I didn't even realize I needed until I finally had it in this industry, and it's something I try my hardest to contribute to on an ongoing basis. If you have a question, are looking for encouragement, or just want to say "hi", please know you're always welcome to shoot me an email at erich@erichmcvey.com. I'm truly happy to hear from all fellow photographers passionate about their craft. We're in this journey together, and building each other up is truly the fastest way to success and fulfillment for everyone. To wrap up this take over, here's one final image, shot on #fuji400h in Elk, CA during a scouting/planning trip for an #erichmcveyworkshop with @meredithadelaide, @ginnyau, @amymcvey and @twigssfloral. While we were shooting in a small secluded cove a massive grey whale appeared just off shore and watched us for 15 minutes while we worked. We all just stopped and stared in awe (before realizing the sun was setting and we needed to get back to shooting!). I'm so thankful for photography, the memories and experiences that being a photographer has provided me, and for the incredible people I've been lucky to meet along the way. Thanks again everyone - have a great weekend! - Erich

Blurry love in motion, captured in one of my favorite locations – the Oregon coast. This image of @jessicarosephoto and her husband, Daniel, was taken on a cloudy day at Otter Rock, shot on #fuji400h. @erichmcvey

This image is incredibly special to me – an intimate moment shared between two people I’m lucky to call friends, on the morning of their elopement. Shot on #ilforddelta3200. Kaela & Jonathan flew from Alabama to elope on the Columbia Gorge here in Oregon. They started their day slowly, making coffee and breakfast together, while I observed from a distance, snapping moments as they naturally unfolded. We then headed to a secluded forest where they exchanged vows. Styled by @ginnyau @loomcurated

Movement on film. I can’t get enough of it. This was shot on #portra800 during a session in my natural light studio that we put together just for kicks. It’s always freeing to create something without pretense or preconceived purpose, and I try to make sure I give myself time to do so as frequently as possible. It allows me to grow and push boundaries without hesitation or risk. Model: @nini_jen of @option_models | MUAH: @bethlevelartistry | Styling: @amymcvey
