Brian Whitt + PV Takeover +Day 2

PhotoVision Team

@brianwhitt Takeover Day 2: Trusting wholeheartedly in others has always been a challenging experience for me. I am a total perfectionist at my core, and have wanted executive control over team projects since probably the first grade. That said, I have learned over the years that the most amazing shoots—beyond your wildest dreams—can come true when you fully trust in another’s creative vision to augment your own. I seemed to have this immediate trust and respect for my friend @ponderosa_and_thyme’s work after the first time we spoke. Katie is a wildly talented and creative florist who always seems to create arrangements with a little piece of her soul in them. This is one of my favorite arrangements by her. She didn't need my permission to create this beauty, and I didn’t want to try to have her create something in my mind. Rather, my trust in Katie hopefully helped in creating an environment where she felt comfortable to totally let loose creatively and follow her inspiration in the moment. Honestly, she would have done it anyway because that’s just how she rolls. 🙂 As creatives working together, I believe we have to champion each other to be brave and believe in our artistic visions.

@brianwhitt Takeover Day 2: I was totally honored when @mespetitesdentelles asked me to photograph her lookbook on the Oregon Coast. She designs these exquisite robes and is based in France. We have never met in person and have only corresponded via email to this day. I wanted to be certain the images our team created in Oregon would capture her heart and vision, to inspire brides in France with her lovely robes. Talk. About. Pressure! For me, when the pressure’s on, it's all about believing in yourself, your skills and most of all, your team, to create something incredible. This was also one of my first times pushing film for a client (Fuji400h +1) and I was over the moon about the results.

@brianwhitt Takeover Day 2: Allow for time to try new things. It can be uncomfortable trying something new—you’re risking that it will go sideways or be incredible. But one thing is for sure, pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone as a creative will always pay off because you will learn something new. Here is a portrait of @jangles3 using Delta3200 just minutes after sunset. Playing with new film stocks and exploring outside of your norm will help you stay fresh as an artist. I have found it is so important to plan for personal projects, or even just a few minutes of personal work during a shoot, these moments are the ones that feed you fresh energy. When I get my scans back from PhotoVision, I like to reflect on how the images make me feel—what did I learn about the film, the lighting, etc.? Recognizing the feelings and “look” I get from a specific film stock empowers me to incorporate that film into my next wedding or project. On wedding days, I often bring a borderline obnoxious amount of film along because nobody fully knows how the day is going to pan out, how much light will be available and what the vibe will be. Whenever we change locations, I will pick my film stock based off of what will best compliment that scene and create a cohesive look with the rest of my clients’ images. It’s in the moments of trying something new that I learn.

Maria Lamb + PV Takeover + Day 2

@maria.lamb Takeover Day 2: Have fun and try new things, this will encourage growth and keep you inspired. This photo was actually my first attempt to try a double exposure on film. I unknowingly ended up with a triple exposure! When you take risks and try things you haven’t done before, you can end up with something better than you expected. Definitely try a double (or triple) exposure if you haven’t before, just not at a wedding or paid gig! Start first with a simple frame—a couple against the sky or a person’s profile against a white wall. Then, you can try snapping your second frame—using fabric, flowers, mountains or trees. Just experiment and see what happens. Pro tip! If you own a DSLR, it may already have a double-exposure feature built in. If so, test it out. This is a great (free!) way to play around in-camera and see your results right away. Then, when it comes to shooting double exposures on film, you will feel more confident!

@maria.lamb Takeover Day 2: Things don’t always pan out the way you think they will, am I right? I've learned to roll with the unexpected and make the best of it. After our venue fell through for the #sinclairandmoorworkshop just days before it started, @sinclaireandmoore had to rethink things and quickly find another venue. This led to us using his own studio, which was pretty awesome and absolutely stunning. But the light there was . . . well, there wasn't much of it. I almost ended up shooting all digital because I wasn't sure film could handle the low light. But after having a quick phone chat with @brian.wood at @photovisionprints, I decided to shoot Fuji 400 after all and push the rolls 2 stops. Although this isn't something I would recommend doing just for the fun of it, it really saved my butt, and look how gorgeous it turned out! You wouldn't even know we were lacking light, right?

@maria.lamb Takeover Day 2: This photo is in here just because PhotoVision is awesome and I didn’t have to make any adjustments to it in post. I love the raw emotion here. I’ll often try to get my clients to move during a shoot, as it makes them feel more comfortable than standing stagnant and posing. In this image, I told them to practice their first dance. You can also ask the groom to whisper something into his bride’s ear—this always gets her to laugh. I like to give my clients space, or have them walk away from me, so they feel like they're more private and not stuck in front of a camera. This will get them more relaxed and talking to each other.
