Brian Whitt + PV Takeover + Day 3

PhotoVision Team

@brianwhitt Takeover Day 3: I just love the joy this mama feels for her baby in this moment. I am constantly pushing myself to capture more authentic moments. Never be afraid to respectfully take charge of a shoot. I often, if not always, pick locations for my clients and often help them pick their outfits. After all, they are counting on ME to deliver my best, and so am I. It is OK to take charge in a heartfelt and confident manner and simply explain why you’ve selected a particular location. However, I will always ask where my clients feel their best—open spaces or closed spaces. As I have learned from @ginnyau’s styling course, this will help put clients more at ease. Believe in yourself no matter what! You are worth it. You have a skill and a talent and a commitment as a photographer to deliver powerful and meaningful images to clients.

@brianwhitt Takeover Day 3: “Vulnerability is about sharing our feelings and our experiences with people who have earned the right to hear them.” — Brené Brown

Be bold. Share your talents with the world and always deliver your best work! You will soon find yourself surrounded by creatives who continuously inspire you and encourage you to execute your vision. I loved collaborating on this bridal editorial shoot with @elizabethdye titled #projectpirateship. The concept was born from Elizabeth’s creative vision, inspired by a ‘90s music video and a shipwreck, that took place off the Oregon coast. Here, our bride is longing to see her groom as she waits on shore for his return. (Spoiler alert! He doesn’t make it, so the shoot takes a moody, but beautiful turn.) This project was such a blast and it’s always a pleasure to try something new creatively with great friends.

@brianwhitt Takeover Day 3: No matter what, always be yourself when working with other people, and don’t be afraid to have a little fun! From time-to-time, I feel like I need to constantly direct my subjects, but I have to remind myself this isn’t the case. I want my clients’ photos to be unique to them, to be a true documentation of their personal relationship—not what *I* think they should be or how they should look. I’ve found that when I give my subjects broad, sweeping directions, the outcome is much more genuine. When the moment and the couple are right, I can say, “Hey, whisper something weird in his ear!” And that’s when we get an interaction like this . . . one of pure joy.

@brianwhitt Takeover Day 3: A huge thanks to PhotoVision for allowing me to take over their Instagram for a couple days. There is absolutely no way I could do this work without them. They are such a highly-capable, responsive and genuine group of people. I feel so grateful that they process my film. Their work is second to none!

It has been such a pleasure sharing some of my vulnerabilities as a creative and how to inspire your couples to be more vulnerable. We are all on this journey together. May we continue to support and encourage one another along the way. Keep up the great work, everyone! And please, feel free to drop me a line at Brian@BrianWhitt.com, I am here to help! 🙂

Brian Whitt + PV Takeover + Day 1

PhotoVision Team

Hi there! My name is @brianwhitt. I am a wedding and editorial film photographer based in Portland, Oregon and I am honored to be hosting a #pvtakeover for the next few days. I totally could not do this without PhotoVision! Over the last few years and many conversations, I have fallen pretty hard for PV. More doting on PV to come, but during my time with you, I want to talk about something that is not always as pretty as the images we share . . . Vulnerability. As creatives and photographers, we experience it all the time—heck, it's part of being human! Being vulnerable as an artist means taking chances, putting yourself out there and bringing to life something no one else has seen before. For us wedding photographers, we do this by showing the love and unique connections our couples share in a beautiful, artistic way. I personally have a huge thing for human relationships, and I believe these connections are why we are here—to be vulnerable with one another. If you'd come along with me, over the next few days I'll be sharing how some of my own creative vulnerabilities actually led to spectacular outcomes, along with a little help from my friends at PhotoVision!

@brianwhitt Takeover Day 1: This . . .  the FIRST image I ever took on film, was at the #erichmcveyworkshop and was scanned overnight by PhotoVision! In my opinion, there is a lot of beginner’s luck in this image, as it took me another good year of playing with only one or two film stocks to really embrace and feel confident about being a film photographer. Up until this image, I was shooting digital for about a year and a half. And before my digital days, I hadn’t picked up a camera more complicated than an iPhone. But once I realized film was what I had been seeking, I was hooked—hard—and jumped into the deep end. I put all my business’ resources toward @erichmcvey’s workshop in October 2014. It was a huge exercise in vulnerability for me. I had never worked with film before and knew so little about film photography, but here I was investing in a workshop led by a super-talented guy with a #manbun surrounded by talented photographers. The only thing I had to lean on was my gut feeling that I knew it was the right investment both professionally and personally. Erich and @amymcvey’s workshop was beyond incredible, and this image wouldn’t have been possible without a ton of wonderful folks believing in my work before I truly did.

@brianwhitt Takeover Day 1: Creating a safe space that enables couples to feel super comfortable is paramount to me. I love the moments when I am able to encourage couples to be vulnerable with each other so their unique love can shine through in an image. I want them to remember and be inspired by these moments again and again. Working with couples out in nature in small, intimate groups has really enabled me to foster a space of comfort and freedom, allowing couples to express their love more freely. Also, I give lots of positive feedback during the shoot to lighten the mood, by telling couples how much I love what’s happening in the moment, by cracking jokes or just by talking about one of my favorite subjects—food. When you take the focus off your camera, folks can really relax, and then you have an opportunity to capture real, true, authentic moments. Lindsay and Jai here have such a beautiful love and I wanted to be sure I caught an image of their tenderness for one another.

@brianwhitt Takeover Day 1: This shot did not magically appear after the first try. It took me 3 or 4 good runs to capture the inherent movement of @clairelafaye’s stunning gown. When I first started photographing people, I used to feel silly asking a model or couple to repeat a movement or pose. I would think, “Is this person going to wonder why I didn’t catch it the first time?” or “What the heck kind of professional is this guy?!” But over time, I relaxed and learned to pay close attention to what catches my eye, to try new things and never compromise on delivering the best results I possibly can. That doesn’t mean I act like a little Mussolini who has to control everything. The goal for all of us is to deliver our own best work. There is no need to feel silly for doing something different, as long as your clients are having fun. Take a chance on your vision and be confident with the people you are photographing. Most likely, others will believe in you and add to your vision. And when they see their final images, they will be so happy you went for it!

@brianwhitt Takeover Day 1: I have become such a sucker for close-up portraits! I love their intimacy and how they capture something special about the subject. When I first started photographing people, I would not have dared getting my camera 10 inches from someone else's face. Talk about being all up in their personal bubble! When you take shots like this, it's all about expressing confidence in yourself and inspiring confidence in your subject. I give lots of positive encouragement and very little direction to help my subject feel comfortable in the vulnerable moment we share. I also don’t linger and try to make the process fairly quick and painless. Here, there is something to be said about @kimiaa7’s eyes that seem to gaze straight through you.

Heather Hawkins + PV Takeover + Day 3

Stephen Wood

@heatherhawkins Takeover Day 3: Shooting film pushes me to be a better photographer, forcing me to be present in the moment and take the time to compose something meaningful. The intentionality behind each frame is one of my favorite parts of shooting film.

#pvtakeover #heathersvision #contax645 #zeiss80mm #portra160 #photovisionprints #sp3000 @tracymeltonartistry @shopgossamer @oncewed @hochzeitsguide @taylorgreene @kodak_photo @kodakprofilm

@heatherhawkins Takeover Day 3: This is one of my favorite images, styled and directed by @ginnyau, someone I am often inspired by. To incorporate movement here, we held a fan off to the right of the model—simple things like that can help humanize an image and add a layer of emotion. I love capturing the femininity of a bride by focusing on her hands, lips, shoulders, etc. Thank you so much for following along these past three days, I hope you enjoyed seeing some of my work and hearing my perspective! I’m signing off here, but would love for you to follow me over at @heatherhawkins! Please feel free to ask me any questions, I would love to hear from you!

Heather Hawkins + PV Takeover + Day 2

Stephen Wood

@heatherhawkins Takeover Day 2: Depth, density and rich colors are the result of correct exposure and a wise lab. Fuji + PhotoVision is an exceptional combination that helps me deliver a detail shot like this, all while maintaining highlights and giving the image a softer feel. I like to shoot tablescape details in open shade if possible, and always ask the florist which arrangement is his or her favorite, so I can focus on that particular one.

@heatherhawkins Takeover Day 2: Dallas, Texas doesn’t have an abundance of lavender fields or foggy coasts, so sometimes you have to get creative and shoot in your own bathroom! For this “getting ready” image, @bowsandarrowsflowers foraged greenery from my backyard, @kylieswanson styled a simple wedding gown and the model, @alexeatsplants_,wore my grandmother’s onyx ring. Sometimes less is more! This was shot with a 1/8 second shutter speed on a Contax 645 with a Zeiss 80mm on Fuji 400. I always have a tripod with me for low light situations such as this!

Heather Hawkins + PV Takeover + Day 1

Stephen Wood

Hello! @heatherhawkins here. I’m honored to be taking over @photovisionprints for the next couple of days! I’ll be sharing some of my favorite images and what went into making each frame. It is awesome to watch the resurgence of film these past few years and to see all the wonderful talent that PhotoVision attracts. Like many of you, I have found the customer service at PhotoVision to be incomparable, and have been working with them ever since. Because of the technical nature of photography as an art form, it is so important to have an open flow of communication with your lab. With PhotoVision, I have never felt so valued as a customer. Establishing a personal connection was instantaneous, and I couldn’t be happier with our relationship and the work they deliver for me time and time again. If you are an introverted photographer, like myself (this is why I stay behind the camera), trust me when I say you can feel comfortable calling PhotoVision to ask the team anything. They are excellent at pinpointing issues and helping you find solutions. Communicate with your lab, it can only help you achieve your Vision.

@heatherhawkins Takeover Day 1: Film provides a nostalgic, yet timeless feel, and I love creating within that tension. This was a test shoot where I pushed expired Portra 160 to capture the mood I desired, and it worked so well. I realize it’s not groundbreaking to photograph a model in cloudy window light, but it was a fun opportunity for me to grow and try something new. I came away from this shoot with a fresh perspective. If you can, make time to shoot something for yourself to stay inspired.

Jake Anderson + PV Takeover + Day 1

Stephen Wood

Hi! @jakeandersonphoto here! One of my favorite questions to ask is, “What is the intention, the purpose, of this?” And I found myself asking it in regards to this amazing opportunity of hosting a #pvtakeover. This is what I came to: To share some of my favorite images with you all, absolutely—such as this shot, taken in the beautiful, rolling hills of Santa Ynez, California (take me back, please!)—but to also allow some insight into my process and, hopefully, bring about inspiration and encouragement! Community is one of the most important aspects of our jobs as photographers, and I cannot wait to discover what incredible experiences await through this community of talent!

#jakesvision #pentax645nii #fuji400h #santaynez #california #photovisionprints #sp3000 #fujifilm @fujifilm_northamerica

Part of my professional life that I have kept somewhat secret is that I am (in “real” life) a 6th grade math teacher. While this job is amazing and I get to high-five pubescent goobers all day, it also means I bring a unique perspective to my work in photography. I am as passionate about photography as I am about teaching! From June 27-30, I will have the amazing opportunity to merge both my passions during my workshop in Stillwater, Minnesota. In a year where there seems to be more workshops than photographers, what I really believe will set mine apart is my pedagogy. Instructional time, and the ability of the instructor to effectively guide attendees toward acquiring the skills they came seeking, is paramount. Workshop attendees will learn through hands-on activities, tasks and in-depth discussions. I am so excited for attendees to gather knowledge from our incredible hosts and speakers, including @emilieanneszabo, @studiofleurette and @emilymichaelsking, the Managing Editor of @oncewed.

One of the greatest learning experiences and opportunities I have had in my time is working with some of this industry’s best florists, and truly understanding how they view their work. When collaborating with a florist for the first time, show them your viewfinder. Ask them if you are seeing what they envisioned. Listen. Be willing and humble enough to let them step in and correct a few things. This bouquet, by @studiofleurette, has been one of my favorites—but it is only because I allowed myself to see it as florist Dani Erickson saw it.

Donny Zavala + PV Takeover

Stephen Wood

Hello all, Donny Zavala here! It’s an honor to have the opportunity to take over PhotoVision’s Instagram for the next three days! I’m looking forward to sharing my film journey, my style, why I shoot film, how I got started and a bit about my upcoming workshop in Oregon! First off is this image from the Erich McVey Workshop last June in Elk, California. Prior to attending the workshop, I had been shooting film for about a year. When I first started shooting film, my eyes were drawn to Erich’s work. Long story short, he is why I shoot film. Attending his workshop was amazing and taught me a lot . . . yet, it was just the beginning of digging deep, chasing my film photography dreams and creating my own journey. Your journey is yours, but bring others along for the ride—collaborations lead to knowledge and inspiration. Be driven, be vulnerable, be available, be open, and lastly, don’t settle for less.

I was recently asked, “How do you avoid posing your clients?” . . . Honestly, I think posing a client is inevitable, as most clients are not models. However, I don’t call it posing—I call it directing to create real moments. Even though I direct, I will not take a picture until I see that my subjects are engaged in a small vignette of honest interaction. I choose the right backdrop with the right lighting, then I ask the couple to engage in conversation. This is where the story is told slowly and carefully through my images. My clients will get high-fives when they share their real moments with me! We will cover how to do just this in my upcoming Oregon Coast Workshop this August.

@lavendersflowers @tonoandco @hikarimurakami @etablirshop @roseanddelilah @nikkiannespahn @ishaanreyna @byangeline #donnysvision #pvtakeover #contax645 #fuji400 #la #california #sunnygablescastle #photovisionprints #sp3000 #fujifilm #oregoncoastworkshop

Often times it’s easy for us to focus on the small details of a shoot, and we forget how important it is to showcase the environment in which the story is being told. When I first started, I was always shooting close-ups and the intimate tight shots. It took a while to slow down and notice the scenery surrounding my subject. Case in point—recently I met with a client in Portland, Oregon who was getting married at Smith Rock and she said, “I want to remember where I got married.” So, grab yourself a 45mm to capture the entire scene. Your client will be thankful you did.

Light is the single most important element in film photography. Light is vitally important for how I want my images to turn out. Thanks to my main man, Erich McVey, who showed me the way, I’ll chase the light all day long, for it can make or break an image (as it will make or break my final images and how I want my style to continue to evolve.) My quick tip: find out your local sunset time, grab some Fuji400, a light meter and start shooting about 45 minutes before sunset and 15 minutes after the sun dips below the horizon line. Come learn more at the Oregon Coast Workshop! (Interestingly, this image was taken at sunrise. Similar rules apply.)

What are “authentic moments,” outside of becoming an industry cliche? Authentic moments come from events that are real, fluid and occur naturally. In the midst of a shoot, I constantly ask myself: Are these moments truly happening? Or am I making them happen? The client, now more than ever, is seeking authentic moments—and we, as photographers, must deliver. We can do this by having input in the pre-wedding itinerary. Allowing time to capture real moments as they unfold is crucial to avoid re-creating moments later in the day. Establishing a pre-wedding itinerary with your clients at the forefront will make this task much easier and your clients will love you for it! Yes, some weddings will need redirecting . . . but you’re in control—make it happen!

@lavendersflowers @tonoandco @hikarimurakami @etablirshop @roseanddelilah @nikkiannespahn @ishaanreyna @byangeline #donnysvision #pvtakeover #contax645 #la #california #sunnygablescastle #photovisionprints #sp3000

How often have you second-guessed your talents? Have you ever felt like your work wasn’t good enough to work with a certain vendor? Don’t worry, if we’re honest, we’ve all been there. I’ve been there. I’ve asked and been turned down many times. What does that mean? Does it mean I wasn’t good enough? Did my style clash? Was it because I don’t shoot film well enough? Why? This is perhaps one of the most challenging areas for photographers, and will tear many of us apart in ways that are unhealthy, creating doubt. Let me tell you one thing—don’t quit. Pick your head up and look the other way. Look for other opportunities. Having a few styled shoots under your belt can greatly impact your chances of being published, and I will cover how to do just this at the Oregon Coast Workshop this summer. Your opportunity is waiting. Go get it!

@ponderosa_and_thyme @elderoak_and_thorn  @alextical @elizabethdye@austieeckley @byangeline @bigwigdonuts @foragedfloral #donnysvision #pvtakeover #contax645 #fuji400 #silverton #oregon #strandfarm #sunnygablescastle #photovisionprints #sp3000 #fujifilm #oregoncoastworkshop

Going the extra mile for clients and vendors is a huge part of our job. This can be anything from a quick email to showing up early to scout the venue! Ultimately, word of mouth and how we interact with others will make or break a deal, I can’t stress this enough. Prior to working in photography, I spent 15 years in the customer service industry, where my day consisted of making people smile, making sure the door was held open for them and asking them how I could help. (If I could teach a class just on this, I would, but I think I’d need a whole workshop to cover this aspect of our jobs.) Self-employment is fun, but we still have to remember that we are working with other human beings who want to be well-liked, well-received and well taken care of. Come hear me speak about this at the Oregon Coast Workshop this August. We owe it not only to our clients, but to our career.

@fujifilm_northamerica #donnysvision #pvtakeover #contax645 #fuji400 #kailua #hawaii #photovisionprints #sp3000 #fujifilm#oregoncoastworkshop

Why do I shoot film? Seriously, shooting film is great—but it can be challenging, and at times, disappointing . . . bad light, out-of-focus images, incorrect settings and finicky cameras can make for an awful day. (You know what I’m talking about.) But I would not trade it for anything. Film has created an opportunity for me to work with amazing clients, vendors and other film photographers. I’m not biased toward all things film—digital photography is amazing, and there are lots of digital photographers who bring so much talent to the industry. So why is film for me? I have found that when I look at my film images, they evoke a feeling of satisfaction. I can remember the very moment I composed the image, hear the laughs from my clients and remember the second I released the shutter. It’s an art form that continues to challenge me. It allows me to be more consistent in my images and have control of my overall aesthetic. But don’t go at it alone. Ask other film photographers for advice, attend a film workshop, and most important, establish a relationship with the professionals at PhotoVision—they will care for you throughout your film journey!
