Maria Lamb + PV Takeover + Day 3

Stephen Wood

@maria.lamb Takeover Day 3: When I started photographing weddings, I told myself that I would somehow (whether it be through workshops, online courses or learning from a friend or role model) educate myself at least once a year. This not only keeps you learning new things, but also keeps you inspired. This is something I will continue to do because there is always room for growth and there will always be new things to learn. I had the privilege of learning from @josevilla (one of the best in our industry) at the #mexicoworkshop2014 and my business and mindset truly changed after that experience. At the time, I was still very scared of film. But at the workshop, all the film was paid for and the lab fees were heavily discounted, so I thought, now is the time! Just go for it and shoot as much as I want! At the end of the first day, all the other attendees had shot 10-15 rolls each and I had shot, like, 4. I realized I just needed to dive in. The next day, I shot my heart out. It was really freeing for me, and from that day forward it made  me more confident with shooting film.

@maria.lamb Takeover Day 3: In this oversaturated market, comparing yourself to others can be discouraging—especially when we as photographers need to be so plugged into social media for our businesses. To be honest, this is still a daily struggle for me. It can be discouraging scrolling through Instagram or Facebook and seeing so much amazing content. I’ll try to catch myself if I’m feeling discouraged and take a break. It’s a balance. You want to support other photographers and be happy for them, but you also need to keep tabs on yourself. I try to pull inspiration from other avenues. One way I do this is when I’m making an inspiration board on Pinterest. I’ll try not to pull another photographer’s actual shots, but pull other types of art—paintings, photos of textures, architecture and what not. Also, if I’m in the middle of a shoot and think to try something, something that may feel a little different, instead of throwing that thought aside, I push myself to try it anyway. Sometimes it doesn't work out. But when it does, I typically end up liking my photos better because they are ME and I created them on my own. Be true to yourself, there is only one YOU. No one else can be better at being you. Do your best and try your hardest not to compare yourself to others, then watch yourself flourish.

Maria Lamb + PV Takeover + Day 1

Stephen Wood

Hi all, @maria.lamb here. I am honored to have the chance to do a #pvtakeover for @photovisionprints, and I cannot be more excited. These guys have been incredibly helpful in my film journey since I started about 2-1/2 years ago, and I honestly owe them so much credit to my growth over that time. They have been so personal, involved and willing to help me throughout my whole film journey. I am a self-taught photographer, I never took classes in high school, and only took one digital photography course in college (where I was originally going to become a nurse). That was 6 years ago. And I have been shooting full-time for 4 years since. I learned about film through workshops and other creatives, including PhotoVision’s @_stephenwood, who has been super helpful to me from the beginning. Any time I had questions, any time I was going into a new lighting situation, Stephen was so great giving me advice on how to handle it. Over the next couple of days, I will be sharing some photos and thoughts with you. Happy to have you guys along for the little ride!

@maria.lamb Takeover Day 1: When I picked up my first film camera, I about died. I was so afraid to even touch it, and I also had no idea how to use it. Once I got my first rolls back, I thought, why have I not been doing this?! With that said, for some reason, I still had a hard time diving in. It took me about 6 months before I decided to throw away all fear and just go for it. Since then, me and that camera (Contax 645) have been inseparable. I realized that fear was holding me back from something so beautiful and fulfilling. Don’t let fear hold you back from things you are passionate about. If you are scared to do something, it’s likely that’s exactly what you should be doing. This image was from my first styled shoot on film, which was also my first time shooting all film. Because we didn't have a big budget, I decided to shoot the whole thing in just 4 rolls (a big thanks to @kaeandales for pushing me to do so on this shoot). It was very scary for me, not knowing how my film would turn out, but we all ended up loving the outcome. This really helped me grow and trust in my abilities.

@maria.lamb Takeover Day 1: Film has taught me so much. It makes me slow down and think before I shoot. Instead of just shooting endlessly and waiting till I get a great shot, I think about all the elements of what makes a strong image ahead of time. Film makes me more methodical about each individual frame, which in return creates intentional results and has made me a better photographer. The expense of film was a big motivation for me to slow down. I couldn’t afford to be shooting as much as I would when I was trigger happy on digital, and I didn't want to spend that much anyway, and I learned I didn't need to, either. Once I slowed down, I realized I enjoyed the process that much more, I could actually take a step back, look at the situation and interact with my clients more. It became a more intentional experience overall. I don't know that I would have slowed down if I hadn't chose film.
