@melissajill Takeover Day 3: This shoot was a lesson in simplicity for me. It started as an idea to include our interns in a shoot showcasing a couple dresses from a new local bridesmaid dress boutique. We had fun going to the store and having the girls play dress-up. We found more than just two we liked, so the girls invited some of their friends to join in and model for the shoot. I asked floral, hair and makeup vendors who are friends to join in, too. The shoot evolved in the planning phase, but still stayed VERY simple. Just four girls (and a groom/boyfriend not pictured) in pretty dresses in a pretty location. No other details. I didn’t have grand plans for publication, but was just shooting for myself and my portfolio. We did submit the shoot in the end, and it was picked up for the front page of @stylemepretty. I was shocked, because I have put way more work and thought into other shoots that were passed over by top publications. Lesson learned: Styled shoots don’t have to be over-the-top. Sometimes simple is better.

@melissajill Takeover Day 3: This here, my friends, is my favorite subject to point my camera at. My sweet #dixieschnauzer. I’m a firm believer that dogs are one of God’s best creations, so I couldn’t resist including Dixie’s sweet mug in my takeover. I secretly love when I have a partial roll left over at the end of a wedding day because it gives me the perfect excuse to “waste” some film on her. Let’s not just use our abilities and the gorgeous medium of film to capture what is important to our clients. Who do you love more than life itself? I challenge you to point your camera at them today.

@melissajill Takeover Day 3: This is Murphy and Alexis during their engagement shoot in Sedona, Arizona. Two months from now, I will have the honor of photographing their wedding in the Dominican Republic. I have been blessed to get to know this couple during our time together thus far and already consider them friends. And looking at this image makes me SO EXCITED to shoot their wedding. Guys, let me remind you, just as you and the rest of the wedding photography community have reminded me countless times—what we do MATTERS. We are beyond blessed to get to tell stories through images that will be passed onto generations to come and serve as a reminder of real, true, living, breathing love. If you hit a road bump that diffuses your passion for what you do, or you work with a client who leaves your heart feeling trampled, take a deep breath, and refocus on your Murphy and Alexis—on your clients who fuel your passion—the “why” behind what you do. As photographers, we truly are blessed with an opportunity and gift unlike any other. I pray that we can encourage each other in this challenging journey as artists and business owners to be a blessing. Thank you once again to PhotoVision for having me along this week! And to my fellow filmies—thank you for inspiring me! I’ve learned so much from all of you! If you are interested in finding out more about my journey and transition to film two years ago, I’ve written way too much about it on my blog. You can find it all through the temporary link in my profile, @melissajill.  XO—Melissa Jill

@melissajill Takeover Day 2: Engagement shoots are my jam, because I love capturing a genuine connection between two people AND I don’t feel rushed or  pressed for time. Oftentimes, couples are more creative and playful during an engagement session than on their wedding day. As film photographers, we all love a killer location or sweeping views, but sometimes I find that the combo of good light and a simple background allows you to isolate the connection between your clients, providing the most powerful images of all.

@melissajill Takeover Day 2: You would never know it from this image that this wedding took place at a country club. Country clubs are pretty and all, but when you are already shooting the ceremony on the edge of a golf course  it is nice to change things up—at least for me—so that the portraits aren’t all taken on the same manicured green grass. I much prefer the neutral tones of the desert, and thankfully my early arrival for scouting—even at a venue I am familiar with—paid off when I came across this spot down next to the maintenance entrance. Preparation for the win!

@melissajill Takeover Day 2: Light is King. This image was taken as part of a styled shoot during midday when the sun was bright overhead. I knew that I wanted to capture the gorgeous detailing of this @bhldn gown. I’m sure the venue catering manager thought I was crazy to shoot in one of the most nondescript spots of a gorgeous venue—a dark walkway under an overhang that guests merely used to get from one place to another. But while this spot isn’t a location the staff will take you to as their prize portrait site, it provided the perfect side light and neutral background that I needed for my purpose. I’ve found that mixing in these types of minimal shots that have clean backgrounds with portraits in more picturesque locations make for a more well-rounded submission or blog post, giving the eye moments of rest within the story.

Melissa Jill + PV Takeover + Day 1

Hey guys! I’m @melissajill, a Phoenix-based wedding photographer who ADORES PhotoVision (who doesn’t, right?) and I have the pleasure of taking over their account for the next few days to share some of my work and talk film with you all! First off—a little about me. I’m a sweet potato fry enthusiast. Haven’t yet met one that I didn’t immediately consume. I’m a klutz—I’ve both ran into a cactus and have caught myself on fire on wedding days (thankfully, I managed to do both without a single witness). I’ve been chasing my dreams for 13 years now as a wedding photographer and entrepreneur. I get jazzed when two people find the person they want to love forever (being single myself and well-acquainted with the ins-and-outs of dating, I have an appreciation for what a miracle that truly is!) AND I love when clients turn into friends. I have been shooting film for just over 2 years now and shoot digital only in low-light situations that aren’t ideal for film. I have 6 associate photographers who shoot weddings for my brand (all digital) and I feel incredibly blessed to be on this journey where I am continually challenged to learn and grow. This image is from one of the first weddings I shot on film, and it shows off the primary reasons why I made the switch—first THE COLOR! Ahh!! Can’t get enough! And then there’s lighting, film handles harsh light so much more beautifully than digital. It’s truly an incredible medium. I hope to chat with you in the comments over the next few days. Thanks again to @photovisionprints for having me!

@melissajill Takeover Day 1: When photographing couples, I like to challenge myself to shoot wide shots and then get in tight on the same poses, and change up the angle. For me this keeps things fresh and oftentimes, I come away with compositions like this one, that I love!

@melissajill Takeover Day 1: This magical forest of Aspen trees that we came across during Layla & Joe’s engagement shoot was such a dream to shoot in! The white trees acted as huge reflectors and it made the light so soft, even though it was harsh outside the edges of the forest. Plus, as we all know, film makes everything magical.
