Jo Photo + PV Takeover + Day 3

@jophotos Takeover Day 3 “Sunset.” Welcome to the third day of our #pvtakeover, we're so glad you could join us! This is one of our favorite sunset images. We captured this shot in Charleston, South Carolina moments before the sun dipped below the horizon. The golden sky, the hanging Spanish moss and the sun’s reflection on the river behind our model created an ethereal feel. When you can find moss or leaves that the sun shines through, it provides another layer of dimension, and film renders highlights beautifully!

@jophotos Takeover Day 3 “Eye Candy.” One of our favorite techniques is to shoot through a limb with leaves. Not only does it create dimension, but it also creates the feeling that you are peering in on a couple who is all alone. This style makes the photos feel candid and natural. If there isn't a limb perfectly placed for your shot, we'll pick up a fallen branch and place it in front of our lens. Time and time again, I (Kathleen) will pull down a branch for Joe to shoot through, or I will hold a small branch with leaves in front of his lens to create this look.

@jophotos Takeover Day 3 “Goodbye!” This is our final post for our #pvtakeover, and we'd like to thank you all for following along this week! We’ve shared some helpful tips on how to make the most of Mother Nature, and we hope you take them with you as you go on to explore and create! This shot was taken at a recent wedding in Nashville, Tennessee. It had stormed all day, and there was this gorgeous orange and pink sunset. We schedule sunset photos with all of our couples, a special time where they can step away from their reception for a few minutes and be alone. Most of the time, the bride and groom are so appreciative of having a quiet moment together in the middle of (what can be) a hectic reception. And for this couple, they couldn't have wished for a more gorgeous sky at the end of such a beautiful day. And to you, friends, we wish you all the same beautiful sunsets and peaceful evenings around the world! Thank you again, PhotoVision!

@jophotos Takeover Day 2 “Wind.” Thanks for joining us for another day of our #pvtakeover! We're kicking off day 2 with these lovely bouquets and ribbons flowing in the wind. This shot was from the windiest wedding we've ever photographed! Tennessee is not known for its wind, but this day was an exception. In this shot, we used the wind to our advantage to show movement with the ribbons. But, if you don't have a gust of wind in your back pocket, you can easily create it yourself using a reflector! Joe and I do this often, where one of us creates a breeze with a reflector, while the other takes the shot. For this reason, we prefer stiff reflectors. They’re simple to make yourself, and cost less than $20! We just purchase white foam core from our local art supply store, cut it to the size we want and gaff tape the edges so it doesn't fray. They work even better if it's a hot day—as a makeshift fan, the bridesmaids welcome the breeze! (Side note—thanks to PhotoVision, this was an unedited scan!)

@jophotos Takeover Day 2 “Light Rays.” A few years ago, we were shooting an engagement session when behind the couple a man started mowing the grass and kicking up a lot of dust in the process! Joe saw how well the dust highlighted light rays coming through the trees, and he wanted to be able to recreate that look on the go for future shoots. And so, @atmosphereaerosol was born—an affordable, safe and convenient way to add haze or fog to your scenes. In this shot, we saw sunlight streaking across the ground, so we sprayed about 20 seconds of Atmosphere Aerosol behind the couple, and it captured the light beautifully on film! When you see sunlight streaking across the ground or rays coming through a window and dancing across the floor, it's a great time to make the most of our spray! Pro tip: If there is a breeze, spray upwind so it can drift into the shot.

@jophotos Takeover Day 2 “Motion Blur is OK.” We're rounding out day 2 of our #pvtakeover with one of our favorite shots from a recent wedding in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park! After hiking through the forest and climbing over rocks and fallen trees for their portraits, our ‘70s hippie-esque couple was briskly walking to their reception. It's so easy to miss the in-between moments as photographers when we're preparing ourselves for the next location, the next event, the next portrait. But if you can remind yourself to keep clicking, and keep watching, you can catch shots likes these.

Jo Photo + PV Takeover + Day 1

Stephen Wood

Hi, friends! It's Joe and Kathleen from @jophotos. We're taking over PhotoVision’s Instagram for a few days, and we're going to show you a little bit of the mountains we call home here in Tennessee! We've been shooting weddings for 8 years, and film for the past 3. We remember the first few months we started shooting film, we talked to @_stephenwood at least once a week (sometimes 3 or 4+ times!) and we seriously wouldn't be where we are today without the helping hands and advice from the fine folks at PhotoVision. We're ready to kick off this week with you, and hope you hang out with us along the way!

@jophotos Takeover Day 1 “Water.” In Tennessee, we're never far from a lake or a river, so we try to incorporate water into our sessions because we absolutely love the look of water on film! It beats digital any day of the week, hands down. This is a shot from one of our favorite water sessions. We went to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park for this shoot in the middle of July. The water in the Smokies is chilly, and our model was actually shivering by the end of the shoot, she was so cold! But the way the water flowed over the rocks and rippled around her was gorgeous, so we added a sheer robe and veil and it elevated the dimension of movement.

@jophotos Takeover Day 1 “Composition.” Mother Nature is truly incredible! So we try to frame our subjects with trees, branches, ivy and other natural creations. This image is from one of our favorite weddings in Charleston, South Carolina. The tree in the background provides a beautiful arch to frame the couple, so it draws your eye to the bride and groom. We're always on the lookout for the way trees lean over a pathway or the way reflections in a pond or lake can help frame our subjects, so they perfectly fit into the photo.
