Cody Hunter Photography + PV Takeover + Day 3

Stephen Wood

@codyhunterphotography Takeover Day 3: As my PV Takeover comes to an end, I want to open up a bit about the rawness of who I am and my heart for wedding photography . . . Create lasting memories. I don't think I "got it" for some time in what I did as a photographer—as a catcher of moments, a visual storyteller, a moment preservationist. Then, my very first client's dad passed away. His memorial photos were the ones I'd taken. His mother's favorite photo of her husband was the one "I" had captured. Then I saw it—like really saw it for the first time. I don't just take pretty pictures—I preserve memories. So now, I approach things differently. I now see a bride "getting ready" as not just putting on a dress, but as a moment she will cling to in 30 or 50 years. This photo—this moment—this memory—of her mother & sister helping her into her dress on her wedding day.

@codyhunterphotography Takeover Day 3: More on creating lasting memories for client . . . To me, it’s simply being genuine. I make it a point to have several phone calls with my couples and make sure I understand who THEY are—not some version I want to mold them to be. I ask simple things like how they met, why they are excited to get married at their venue, what made them choose it, what have they envisioned for their big day or their engagement shoot. When talking with Lauren & Tylor (above)—Lauren said she was looking for beach photos—but after talking further, we quickly realized she answered beach photos because that's what everyone does.  By the end of the call—they'd changed from basic beach photos to a weekend in Miami complete with mojitos and swimsuits! I want to give my clients  genuine memories of who they truly are. I want Lauren & Tylor to look at these images when they are 80 years old and say "Yes—that was us—young, hand-in-hand, running through waves, celebrating our anniversary on the beach."

@codyhunterphotography Takeover Day 3: To close my PV takeover . . . I want to thank you for letting me share my images, a little about who I am and the heart behind what I do. The last and greatest piece of creating "lasting memories" that I talked about today is to go out and create your own! My family and travels are what inspire so much of who I am and how I see the world in my imagery. Sometimes, I get so caught up in "wedding season" that I need to go out and live my own memories, catch my own moments and preserve my own life. 😃 This was taken n Gordes, France this summer—where I spent 5 weeks making memories and toting around my Contax with my fam. Always take time to shoot for yourself—whatever it is. Landscapes, your kids, your dog—anything! I never want my passion for shooting to simply become a way to pay my bills.

Cody Hunter Photography + PV Takeover + Day 2

Stephen Wood

@codyhunterphotography Takeover Day 2: Catching moments . . . I think what I've learned most is to rarely remove my camera from my eye. I will often say goofy things to create laughter and fun between a couple in the "in-between" shots. They tend to be more relaxed then and these are often the best moments—the time to catch them "off guard" and more natural. My heart, as a visual storyteller of weddings, is to see the unseen. To give my couples a gallery of beautiful surprises—of moments often fleeting, and often missed or forgotten that day, for them to cherish . . . like laughter as you fall off your getaway car. 😊

@codyhunterphotography Takeover Day 2: More on catching moments . . . While I shoot 90% of my weddings on my Contax, I always have my Canon 1V loaded and ready to fill in the gaps. I primarily use the 1V for fast situations like ceremony time. After some ill-planned and missed moments where I wanted to kick myself later, I am now super aware of how many frames I have left on my Contax before the ceremony starts and have a few loaded inserts ready to go, too. Even if I have to burn a few last photos on the Contax to prepare, I will. I shot this image on the 1V at one of my favorite weddings of my career in Provence, France this summer. When the scans came back, I was so happy about THIS moment right here—and could not wait to give it to my couple!

@codyhunterphotography Takeover Day 2: To finish today on catching moments . . . I gotta admit, sometimes it's hard—sometimes you get behind on your timeline and feel rushed, sometimes your couple isn't very comfortable in front of the camera and so on. I know it's my job, then, to create an environment where genuine moments can unfold. I never want contrived, but natural—so I simply ask for it from my couple, from a guest, etc. I politely ask a guest to grab an appetizer while I "catch" it, or ask my couple to simply snuggle or walk hand-in-hand. Nothing fancy, but a way to create and catch natural moments in a quick way with minimal input from me and no forced posing.
