Ivy and Gold Photography + PV Takeover + day 3

PhotoVision Team

@ivyandgoldphotography #pvtakeover Day 3: This photo is from a collaboration with my dear friend @ponderosa_and_thyme! We both live in Salem, Oregon, and every spring our city is graced with glorious cherry blossoms, but they vanish quickly with how much rain we get. We wanted to take advantage of them before they were gone, so we put this shoot together in about an hour, in Katie’s living room. Her sweet daughters were our models, and their outfits were a hodgepodge of their clothes, my clothes and Katie’s clothes, ha! After starting out with some standard poses, the girls got a little wild and started tossing petals in the air. This wasn’t something I would’ve thought of on my own, but these images ended up being some of my favorite from the whole set! What I learned from this shoot was to just go with the flow, and create when you feel the pull to create, even if you don’t feel ready! We didn’t have “perfect” elements, we didn’t have much time to shoot and the girls started doing their own thing, but I don’t think we could have planned it better. Things can fall into place when you let them take their own course.

@ivyandgoldphotography #pvtakeover Day 3: This photo is from one of my most favorite styled shoots. The thing that stands out to me about this shoot is that it was something I felt was truly a representation of things I love and am inspired by, vs. trying to keep up with trends or creating content to get “likes.” I was so thankful to work with a team who was willing to just go with the vision and bring out the best parts of it! Sam Lewis of @lewisandlevy was essential in planning and helping all the details come together (our original venue fell through at 8 p.m. the night before, and she managed to find something even better less than 12 hours before our shoot!) Meghan Levy of @lewisandlevy rocked the HMUA, creating the perfect ‘70s vibe I was picturing. Jodi from @stemmfloral created some of the most insane pieces I’ve ever seen, just drenched in color. Our models were a real, married couple whom I saw at a conference and just walked up to and asked if they’d model for me sometime. (😂 As an introvert, this was TERRIFYING!) @clairelafaye loaned us this incredible, flowy gown, and @afabulousfete created the paper goods. This was the first time I’d shot film indoors, and the first time I shot a styled shoot entirely on film. When I look back, I think of all the risks it took to put this shoot together, but also how it turned out to be some of my all-time favorite images I’ve ever created! The point is, let your unique vision shine! Trust your gut when you feel called to create something, and I promise, the results will far outweigh the risks and fear it took to get there. ❤️ (I was thankful to have this shoot featured on both @magnoliarouge and @trendybridemagazine.)

@ivyandgoldphotography #pvtakeover Day 3: Take intentional days of rest! Working from home can be such a struggle, balance-wise. Running a small business by yourself is no. joke. The to-do list literally never ends and it’s so easy to carry the weight of that. Especially during busy season—our weekends are packed to the brim, our editing queues are off the charts and it’s so easy to just work constantly. BUT there is so much value in intentional rest days. Give your body, mind and soul time away from work, and time to enjoy some refreshing activities—reading, bike riding, knitting, exploring my city and thrift shopping are some of my personal favorites—but this may look different for you! Sometimes, on these days, I will even bring out my camera, but *purely* for enjoyment and shooting things I love. No expectations, no pressure. Some of my favorite images have come from these days, because I felt the freedom to experiment with lighting I don’t normally use, or risky exposures, or working with color or movement in a new way. If you take one thing away from my takeover, I hope it’s this— It’s okay to schedule time for rest days, and it’s absolutely worth it to take them! You will come back to your work as a more productive, more optimistic version of yourself, with a fresh perspective and outlook to offer your clients—and not to mention more inspiration to create.
