Kyle John + PVTakeover + Day 1

PhotoVision Team

Hey Instagram World, @kylejohnphoto here, and I am so excited to be hosting a #pvtakeover over the next few days! I suppose you could say I joined the game at a young age. Ever since I could hold a camera, I’ve been taking pictures. My Dad is a photographer (as was his father before him) and he always taught me and encouraged me to look at everything from a different perspective. To never be complacent, to always strive to create and have a darn good time doing it. Film photography has always been a part of who I am and where I come from. It feels like home.

@kylejohnphoto #pvtakeover Day 1: I took a small photo hiatus during my early teen years. I returned to photography after graduating high school when I landed an internship at The Copenhagen Post in Copenhagen, Denmark, where my now wife was living at the time. I jumped right back in with both feet shooting politics almost everyday. This was a turning point for me, it brought back my passion for photography. The newspaper was fast paced, exciting and different every day (just like the wedding industry!). I shot digital during this time, as film had exited most newsrooms, and the format allowed me to do so much in the photojournalism world at a quick turnaround. After finishing up my internship in Copenhagen, I returned to the US and not too long after began pursuing my career in the wedding industry as a photographer.

@kylejohnphoto #pvtakeover Day 1: Wedding photography brought me back to #film. The first time I shot an all film wedding it felt as if I was finally returning home after years of absence. I was energized by the nostalgia of returning to the medium that my father had taught me to shoot on and the thrill of relying on technical knowledge, compositional skills, and the slowness of the process that enables you to connect to the moment, the surroundings and most importantly your subjects.

From that moment on, my workflow and entire outlook on my business changed completely. Today, I hope my my clients will experience those same nostalgic feelings of homecoming, whether looking through their images 5 years or 25 years from now.

@kylejohnphoto #pvtakeover Day 1: My journalistic background still carries into my work today. I want my clients to be who they are naturally, always. If they feel overly posed, it will 9 times out of 10 look posed. In wedding photography there is a certain amount of posing when guiding your clients into positions and movements, but I think it is truly about allowing your clients to be themselves and documenting moments as they unfold. I know this isn’t always easy, check out my next post to learn how I make people feel comfortable in front of my lens.
