Kelbert McFarland + PV Takeover + Day 3

Stephen Wood

@kelbertmcfarland Takeover Day 3: On the final day of my time with you, I wanted to share the importance of working with what you have. In many of the photography groups I'm in, there's always discussion of which camera/film combination to use or "I only shoot during golden hour" or "I only want to use the Fuji Frontier scanner instead of the Noritsu or vice versa." In time, you will find your place and you will find your own voice. But till then, each shoot is a journey. You begin at a place, and often times, the destination is unknown or at least the directions to that destination remain a mystery. I want to encourage you to enjoy the journey. Shoot the subject that's right in front of you, not caring so much about the technicalities. They will work themselves out with time. Try to keep the camera you have for some time, too, instead of purchasing the "camera of the month" that everyone talks about in all the groups. If you love color, stick with color. If you only use large format, then be content with that. In short, work with what you have and enjoy your place in this world as a photographer. I captured this couple with my first medium format camera, which I still have, a Mamiya RZ67 with Kodak Portra 400 film.

@kelbertmcfarland Takeover Day 3: One thing I've learned during my time as a photographer, is that kids run the shoot and patience is necessary. I love photographing kids because they ask so much of you, but if you wait for it, they'll give you so much in return. In this image, you see a bride doing her best to gather her beautiful flower girls together for a picture. After a few minutes of struggling, the job became funny. One child was ready, but then the other one wasn’t. It dawned on me—that's the shot. The kids doing what they do while the bride finally gives up in laughter. I couldn't pose that shot if I tried. It's now one of my favorites. I hope you're willing to change plans from time-to-time and realize the shot is right there.

@kelbertmcfarland Takeover Day 3: I want to thank my lab, PhotoVision, for trusting me to share a few of my images and thoughts with you guys! I'll be the first to say, I don't know where I'd be without this lab. They take all my over- and underexposed images and make something beautiful out of them. Give your lab a call or drop them an email and say thanks. They deserve it. This final shot is another one of those simply-crafted images. It features a couple who has become a constant source of inspiration for me. You'll find as a creative that some couples you work with constantly bring out the best in you. Make the time to photograph them often and in all types of environments. This was a lifestyle shoot captured at my home in Tulsa. Once again, I placed them in front of a window and documented the obvious love they have for each other. Simple as that. In a creative landscape that's filled with styled shoots, don't be afraid to strip it all away from time-to-time and keep it simple. Thanks for allowing me a bit of space in your busy world. I do hope you found inspiration and maybe a new idea or two.
