Taylor Lord + PV Takeover + Day 3

Stephen Wood

@taylorlord Takeover Day 3: It is so inspiring to have an amazing model, someone you can just trust to do their thing. I am so refreshed and rejuvenated after a shoot with a great model. We told @godblesserica how we wanted more of a high-fashion vibe, and she did such an amazing job. This is probably my favorite styled shoot to date (shot in January of this year). Side note—when we showed up at this venue, the floor was concrete with green paint. Not really the vibe we were going for, but I didn't have a drop. So we put a tablecloth on the floor, and I took out all the million wrinkles in post-processing. What. A. Beatdown. Although I love when scans come back basically PERFECT, this shoot required a lot more work in post—but it was worth it to not have a terrible floor in the shoot!

@taylorlord Takeover Day 3: I struggle over nothing more on a wedding day than puzzling together the invitation shot. It’s always too busy, or too square, or too boring, or too horizontal, or too unbalanced . . . the list goes on. We took a solid 45 minutes (or was it an hour?) trying to piece this one together, but we were so happy with the results! My best advice for shooting invitations, if you are sans-stylist on a wedding day, is to arrange the largest pieces first. Make sure they’re balanced, either horizontally or vertically, rather than square, so you don’t have a ton of “blank space” around an edge (as most of us aren’t shooting in a square format!). Next, fill in the larger pieces with smaller pieces by layering, and throw in a few florals, ribbon or jewels at the end. Then—most importantly—quadruple-check your lines to make sure they’re all straight!

@taylorlord Takeover Day 3: My most favorite shot of every wedding is the recessional! There’s always such great emotion, and everyone is so happy and excited. It’s such a thrilling moment. About 2 years into shooting weddings, I began to notice a ton of my clients were using their recessional shots as their Facebook profile pictures. This taught me to take extra care in those particular moments to capture a great shot! As a fine art film photographer, it’s easy to stay focused on perfecting everything. I have shot beautiful editorials with great models in great light, all wonderful things, but I think the photos I’m most proud of over the last 5 years have a lot more to do with capturing real, meaningful, “decisive” moments for my clients. Just like these recessionals. . . . Well folks, that’s a wrap! Thanks for joining me on this fun journey! Sharing and teaching has been a huge part of my photographic journey over these past 5 years. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or thoughts! I would love to hear from you! XOXO, Taylor
