Kylie Martin + PV Takeover

Stephen Wood

It was about a year and a half ago that I made my way to Elk, CA with a group of enthusiastic film photographers. It was the most captivating experience of my career, I feel like I truly fell in love with film there. I was able to connect, create and learn. I grew an appreciation for the imperfections of film and a serious love affair with light. This image has everything I aspire to create as a photographer: beautiful light, a story, emotion and authenticity.

Let the Littles be Little: This is my own personal rule that I can't preach enough about. Children are, by nature, very curious, imaginative, playful and emotional. I find that allowing them to run, play, laugh, cry and explore helps me see inside their little world and document it in the most authentic way. I love how little Mae found her way to this spot without direction or coaxing. She truly was amazed by the beautiful ocean before her and this image to me captures her child wonder perfectly.

It's All In the Details: When you stand in front of a client, you are there to capture their story at this point in their journey. I find that the story is hidden in the details. Think about it--the people you know best in life have un-missable mannerisms and personality traits. I go out of my way to try and capture those little quirks and traits in a session. It can be anything from the way a child holds their dad's hand, to how a woman looks at her fiancé, to how a couple interlocks when they hug. All of these details piece together a story and help the viewer feel emotionally-connected to the images, yearning for more.

Understanding Light: Next to having great relationships with your clients, understanding light is the most important key to achieving beautiful, luminous images. This quote by George Eastman is something I reference consistently: "Embrace light. Admire it. Love it. But above all, know light." Take advantage of the resources out there and truly study the things that will propel you toward success--understand light, understand your equipment and learn to utilize them together. This image remains one of my favorites. I love that while Melissa is the main focus of the portrait, the light engulfing her tells the story, showing warmth and intimacy. If you give light a voice, it will speak.

The Art of Observation:  We have all done it--gone into a session with the intention of getting it featured on our favorite blog or magazine, the whole "I need this shot, I need this detail, etc." The problem with this mindset is that we don't give authentic imagery when we are so wrapped up in posing and capturing our "dream shots." That is why I urge everyone to take a step back at your sessions and really observe what is going on in front of you. Is the couple nervous? Are they playful? Are they shy? Are they totally smitten? What makes them smile? What makes them at ease? It is our job to observe and document, not create an unauthentic environment of who we think they should be. Take time with your next client to really step back and observe them, learn them and appreciate them for who they are in that moment.

Don't Be Afraid of Eye Contact: The cliché saying is true: "eyes are the window to the soul." After realizing that 90% of my portrait work lacks eye contact, I have recently started to go out of my way to fix that. I think eye contact can be intimidating as a photographer. Eyes are so emotional. l find that you can tell quite quickly how comfortable your subject is when you ask them to look straight into your camera. So the challenge goes back to "The Art of Observation," really pay attention to your subject and connect with them. This image was taken on a beach at sunset. A new mother-to-be, she was trying to tame her hair in the wind. I observed this natural moment and asked her to bring her gaze toward me. It was only about two seconds before she started laughing, but that moment of serenity on the ocean was captured.

Be Creative and Have Fun: We are all artists in this industry, and that means we thrive on creativity. All too often, we slip into this fine art mold and don't really go beyond it. So I encourage you to try something new, try something that makes you say "Damn! Why haven't I done this before?!" You got into this line of work because you have an eye for art, so trust your gut and inspire yourself. Thank you all for listening to my ramblings this week and I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas!
